as a mental health counselor, I work two days remotely from home, three days providing services at a hospital. What eligible expenses can I deduct on my 2024 tax return?

I rent an apartment, I do not have a car. I spend $1k for groceries monthly, and $1k for clothing, cosmetics etc. My bills are $2k annually,

Are you an employee or self-employed? If you are an employee, none of your expenses are deductible.

If you are self-employed, then you may be able to take a home office deduction if the following apply:

  1. You use a spot in your apartment regularly and exclusively for your work.  This means, you would have an area that is specifically for your work. A dining room table that you use also for meals would not count.  However, a corner in your apartment with a desk that you only use for work would count.
  2. it is your principal place of business.

If you are self-employed, you will need to tell TurboTax that you are a sole-proprietor or have a small business and then walk through the steps to enter your income and expenses using either TurboTax Premier Online or TurboTax Home and Business Desktop.

Some other things that would be deductible as a self-employed individual would be your prorated utilities, your professional licensing fee and any CE Courses you must take to keep your license.

Clothing that you can wear on the street and makeup is not deductible. Neither are your groceries. Commuting expenses are also not deductible. Traveling back and forth to one location would be considered commuting.  If you would be traveling to clients homes, those expenses would be deductible.
