Anyone else having this problem
My deductions total around 28-30k however turbotax federal keeps going to the standard deduction of $25,100.
are there any limits or things that would make this come into play?
see below for example - I entered our mortgage interest and other amounts but it just went to $0
Your picture makes it seem that every category is going to zero. While each of those has rules and limitations, that seems pretty rare for all to be $0 I would suggest you review your answers and compare them to limitations and rules in About Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions - Internal Revenue Service .
If your answers meet the criteria and are still not showing, it may be you have something stuck in the program. Follow these steps:
ok so I got someone on the phone and resolved it.
I generally like TurboTax however their questions relating to deductions are not well worded and need improvement.
My problem is that I got a home loan and it was sold literally 3 times to different loan companies. So I had to enter the mortgage deduction as 3 different companies not 1.
TurboTax failed to add up all 3 of those separate loans. It was just taking 1 of them, and as a result I was getting the standard deduction.
I went back into the poorly worded questions and answered them all funky to make TurboTax add up all 3 of the separate mortgage interest deductions. Then TurboTax worked properly and gave me the itemized deduction.
I am not using the online program. Mine is downloaded and I do not use Chrome for any part of the TurboTax program. It is (or should be) a free-standing program and not dependent on cookies.
I have found that the program (and I use that term loosely), is NOT taking my deductions (gives me the standard deduction). It ignores my deductions and only wants to give me the $300. I am married, filing jointly, and more deductions than $600.
I eliminated all the Charitable Cash Deductions, saved under another name, and did a final review. It only gave me $300 and the Standard Deduction (married, Jointly). I tried to fix it to $600 in the Forms but it would not change the number. So the program cannot even do the deductions correctly when nothing is entered. Other Posts in a Charitable Deductions forum here mentions changing the deduction from $300 to $600 in Forms but doesn't really fix the problem. Not even a viable work-around since there are even more problems than just this one.
Last night I also found it ignored the mortgage points from my refi. I now can't imagine how many other screw-ups are in this program.
I quickly went through 2020 TurboTax and found errors there too. Can't wait to go back to 2019 and 2018. Yes, I know how to Import, Fill out Forms, Re-check, Save since I have used this programs for over 10 years.
We now are going to find an accountant to recheck the last 3 years and see what else is wrong. Yet more $$ and time.
If the return is 100% guaranteed, then it's a worthless guarantee since it does wrong calculations and incorrect numbers. What good is a final review if it is WRONG?
