I am filling out my form W-4 for New Jersey for my new job, and I had a few questions:
1) The form provides says you can use a "wage chart" - are there advantages to using the wage chart? or can i just skip this part? I'm assuming you can skip it because it does say "if you have chosen to use the wage chart," but wanted to make sure.
2) The form also asks for "Allowances" and asks for the total number of allowances I'm claiming. Apparently, entering this number will decrease the amount of withholding and could result in an underpayment on your return.
-what exactly is an allowance?
-and what number do people typically put for this line? is it better to put 0?
