Minnesota state tax E file issue: Returns with value less than $5 for total qualified student loans used to pay postsecondary education under student loan information are not eligible for electronic filing

I am unable to E File for Minnesota state tax as TurboTax keeps giving message "returns with value less than $5 for total qualified student loans used to pay postsecondary education under student loan information are not eligible for electronic filing"

I have no idea why this is happening ? Seems Software glitch to me. I have paid 10k in student loans for principal and interest for 2019 so the amount is definitely greater than $5.

This is super frustrating. I already paid $50 to TurboTax for state taxes and now I am unable to file MN state taxes electronically.

There are two entries in the Minnesota state return with regard to student loan information.

The first screen asks about the amount that you paid toward the student loan (including principal and interest).  The second screen asks for the total original loan amount.  On this screen you would enter no more than $5000.

If both screens are not completed, the credit may not be calculated correctly and result in the error message you are seeing.

Hi,

On first screen I had entered 10,000 dollars. On 2nd screen I had entered 5000 dollars.

Can you please help? I keep getting same message ( the one I had originally posted)

There seems to be a software or programming glitch. I am unable to file electronically. I was on TurboTax help call for 1 hr but it was useless

Hi Annette,

This is systemic issue and is affecting many TurboTax PAYING customers. Will there be a fix for this or you will refund my money I paid (50 dollars) for state taxes ?

The only way it works is if you paid <5000 dollars towards student loans for 2019.
TurboTax faults if someone paid >5000 for student loans in 2019 and says unable to file Electronically.

This did the same thing to me. We paid $8712 in payments. I can only enter $5000 even though we owe 64k. It tells me we can’t efile. I’ve filled out everything they’ve asked. Either MN added a new rule this year, or TurboTax has an error. Can anyone help with this?

Having the same issue, paid interest on loans with original balances >$5000. Entered interest paid and $5000 (the max amount) and I get the same error message and can't file State electronically. Hopefully TurboTax can fix their glitch with the extra time to file deadline and I don't have kill trees and pay postage when I already paid for TurboTax.

2 hours on the phone, multiple disconnects and holds but still no resolution with the EXTENDED filing deadline just weeks away. I wonder if TurboTax realizes they suck and are wholly under-delivering on a main marketed value driver for their product, the ability to e-file. Now I have to print state and federal returns (over 100 pages)  to file state in addition to paying posting to send a box of useless paper about 5 miles to the state tax receipt address. Of course no one besides other members having this same issue will ever see this because TurboTax clearly doesn't care of the known issue at this point.

If you feel comfortable, you can put an amount less than 5k for student loan principal +interest and E file. This is not an advice in any capacity. I am not aware of any negative consequences for showing less amount for student loan payments.

I ran into the same issue, I did put $4999 and $5000 and now it went through. This can't be right and I hope they correct it. I've used Turbo Tax since the very beginning and these things shall not happen, They have not fixed this glitch for over 6 months.

Thank you very much for your "unorthodox solution".

Be Great!

I'm struggling hard on this. WHERE do I actually enter this? I can't get to the right screen (or the 1st / 2nd) as referenced. The only area I can find is here I input student loan interest paid - not the original loan amount.

The M1SLC line 7 says: Enter the lesser of $5,000 or the amount of qualified education loan used to pay for your postsecondary education. This is not a software glitch, this is following MN instructions. Line 1 does take the full amount paid towards loans.

Student Loan Credit | Minnesota Department of Revenue states: The credit amount depends on your income, loan payments, and original loan amount. The maximum credit is $500 each year or $1,000 for married couples who file a joint return (if both spouses made payments on their own qualified loans).

When you go through MN state program, you will be asked the questions and your answer will be limited to the $5,000 along with the line 12 preprinted $500 max credit per person.

FOUND A SOLUTION. It is a glitch in the system. You NEED to delete your state tax, and then fill everything out again and it fixes the problem. I just skipped the part where it asks about interest and loans this time

How do you delete a state to start that over?

Not familiar with the Business Edition.  But if it is similar to the other desktop editions there should be a Remove State Return in the File menu in the upper left of the program screen.

I am unable to e-file state due to: "a value < $5000 for total qualified student loans used to pay education under student loan information are not eligible for  e-file."  I haven't had student loans for 20 years.  I went through federal and state repeatedly to see if I accidentally checked some box???!  What a waste of time.  I'm fearful that if I delete my state to redo it, they charge me for reloading?  Is that possible?

Hi, I saw your answer about the M1SLC form for student loans making e-filing difficult.  I have no student loans and did not pay off any loans this last year...., and I still got that message and am unable to e-file.  Can you think of anything that I triggered that would confuse turbo tax?

I paid $25.00 to file my Minnesota Taxes electronically. Because I was penalized by Minnesota for not having enough estimated taxes paid, I later found out I could not file due to the penalty. Since I was not able to file my Minnesota taxes electronically, I am asking for a refund of the $25.00 I paid to file electronically.

Thank you,
