Marland Form 502SU does not reflect in state refund

Line 8 of Form 502 is the line for the amount of refund of state or local income tax. This section of Form 502 is the subtraction from your federal adjusted gross income to get to your Maryland adjusted gross income. Line va on Form 502SU is The Honorable Louis L. Was your state refund on your federal return? This would be on Schedule 1 of your federal tax return, which flows to your 1040, Line 8. 

 

Please keep in mind that state refunds are not always taxable. If all three of the following are true, your refund counts as taxable income:

• You itemized deductions last year, instead of taking the standard deduction
• You claimed state and local income taxes (not general sales taxes)
• Claiming the deduction helped you increase your federal refund or lower your tax bill

Even when your refund is taxable, it may not be the entire amount. It depends on how much the deduction affected your refund or tax bill.
