Just e-filed NY state return. NYS came back to ask for proof of resident. Find out TurboTax didn’t file NYC taxes. What should I do?

New York City resident income tax is part of the New York state tax return. TurboTax will add NYC city tax to your NY tax return.

You did not say what NY wants to know about your residency. Did you claim you were a nonresident or part-year resident of NYC when you had NYC income tax withheld for the whole year?

Follow the instructions on the letter you were sent and respond by the deadline.

You can always discuss your situation with a Live Tax Expert. If you have a copy of the notice on your computer they will be able to view it (with your permission) when they establish a remote video connection.

How do I connect with a tax expert in TurboTax Live?

In the letter from NYS department of taxation. They said my return indicated that I’m NYC resident but did not compute NYC resident tax so they ask for copy of my leases. My W2 didn’t withheld any city tax.  This is my first year claiming as NYC resident so I’m unaware city taxes.  I did follow instruction and uploaded my NYC leases. Not sure I need to file an amend tax return or they will compute taxes for me and send me a bill. Can I use TurboTax tax to efill an amendment?  Do I have to do it before tax deadline 4/18?

If you moved into NYC in 2021, you should have prepared Form IT-360.1 and computed the NYC resident tax based on the period you lived in NYC in 2021.

Did the NYS notice ask you to amend your return? If not, wait for the NYDTF to send you a bill.
