Itemized Deductions

I took Standard Deductions on Fed. return, but want to take itemized deductions on State return.  This is allowable in California.  TurboTax doesn't give me that option.  How can I make it happen?

If you want to take the itemized deductions on your state return, you have to enter all of your itemized deductions on the federal screens. Your deductions will then flow to your California state return.

To enter your deductions, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Search for itemized deductions with the magnifying glass tool at the top of the page.
  3. Click the Jump to itemized deductions link at the top of the search results.
  4. Enter your deductions.

If entering your deductions will trigger you to itemize deductions on your federal return, you can force the standard deduction on your federal return only.

To force the use of Standard Deductions, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on Tax Tools on the left hand side.
  3. Click on Tools.
  4. Click Topic Search
  5. Search "itemized deductions, choosing"
  6. Click on Change my deduction.
  7. Choose Standard Deductions under Which deduction do you want to take this year?
