The New York State Tax return, Form IT-201 is used not only for the state income tax, but for income tax for New York City and Yonkers, as well as the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT). That's why you're being asked about Yonkers.

If you don't live in Yonkers, you are a non-resident of Yonkers. When you see the screen Your Yonkers Source Income you get the question "Did you earn income from Yonkers sources while a nonresident of Yonkers?"

Since you say you've never been there, you probably didn't earn any income from Yonkers sources, and you should just say no.

I am also filing a New York state tax return and TurboTax is asking me about Yonkers. I have no relation to Yonkers whatsoever, so why is TurboTax asking me about it in the first place?

The same thing is happening to me as well! I feel like there should be a way to remove Yonkers all together but I am not seeing it

I'm having the same issue and still hoping to understand why I'm being asked anything AT ALL about Yonkers on TurboTax, given I've never lived or worked there. I may as well be answering questions about Buffalo or Schenectady!

Take a look at the NY State Tax return. You will see that IT-201, your state return, also covers New York City Tax and Yonkers Tax. This is all part of your New York State return, and the questions need to be answered. https://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/current_forms/it/it201.pdf

Yonkers tax. There was no question "Did you earn wages or work in Yonkers?" The address and zip codes on the W-2 were both in Brooklyn and no other income earned. Turbo Tax then said it appeared you earned income in Yonkers. No way to correct that. Did you every live in Younkers. Checked that "no". At the end of filling out the tax return a refund of $X was due. Electronically filed the return. Turbo tax, after I hit the submit button, said we need another piece of information. Were you a resident of Yonkers. My reply. No. The return was electronically filed and the refund was now X - $139 with the $139 going to the city of Yonkers.

How do I get the $139 back?

You will need to file an Amended Turbo tax return. At this point I suggest you contact a specialist that can work through that section of the return with you so that you can reclaim the Yonkers taxes.

Hi Isabella,

I moved to Yonkers from a different city in mid-November 2019 till December, but I didn't have a job nor payed rent. There's a question asking me if I payed the Yonkers resident tax, and I said no because I don't have any w-2's from Yonkers.

Should I just not mention I moved to Yonkers because it was for such a short time? The next question asks me to explain why I didn't pay it.

Sorry for asking here, I hope everything is well with you!

I experienced the opposite problem. I am a full-time resident of Yonkers, but the NY State Tax Dept flagged my return. It wanted proof that I lived in Yonkers full time. They wanted a copy of my drivers license, lease agreement, Con Ed bill and Telephone Bill! I've lived in Yonkers for over 40 years. This problem delayed my return until Mar 24th (today).
