I live in Oregon, but I work in Washington. The company is 100% owned and operated in Washington. Should i be paying Oregon State taxes?

You report all of your income on an Oregon state tax return, regardless of the source of the income when you are an Oregon resident.

If your WA employer is not withholding OR state income taxes you need to be paying OR estimated taxes during the year so you will not be hit with penalties for failing to pay state taxes.

Since you're a resident of OR, you will pay OR state tax on the income you earn, regardless of where its earned.

How would I know if my WA employer is withholding OR state income taxes and also how would I go about paying estimated OR taxes?

Look in boxes 15-17 of your W2 to see if Oregon Taxes were withheld. To make estimated tax payments, there is section in your oregon state return that mentions A few things before we wrap up your state taxes.  Go to other forms>estimated taxes for next year. Here is what this section looks like.

If you prefer, you can make your Oregon estimated tax payments online here:

Similar situation but I work remotely in Oregon for WA Company. Should they be taking out WA taxes? I’m getting double stuffed here and feel like it should be one or the other 🙈

Washington State doesn't have an income tax.

I know that but should I be paying the care tax and the  paid family medical leave tax?

With regard to PFML:

"Several states, including Washington and Oregon, have paid family and medical leave programs. Typically, participation and eligibility for the program will be determined by each state’s laws. Washington and Oregon utilize the same localization test used for unemployment insurance. If an employee’s work is determined to be localized in Washington, then the employee and employer will pay premiums into Washington’s PFML program. If an employee’s work is determined to be localized in Oregon, then the employee and employer will pay premiums into Oregon’s Paid Leave program."

With regard to the "care tax":

"Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, Washington workers became eligible for exemptions from WA Cares if any of the following apply to them:

  • Live outside of Washington."

See page 6 Form OR-40, Oregon Individual Income Tax Return for Full-year Residents Instructions for who must file. If you meet the residency and income requirements, you must file a resident return.

You must pay tax where you use the streets, police, etc unless you have extenuating circumstances, like low income.

Anyone working a normal job will surpass the filing requirement.
