Does anyone else's form stay stuck on state sales tax deduction when you want it to say local income tax deduction?

I clicked on state sales tax deduction to see how entering the purchase of my vehicle would change my refund but I no longer wish to use the state sales tax deduction and want my form to say state and local income tax deduction, but it doesn't.

Yes, if the sales tax deduction does not give you a bigger refund, you do need to indicate that you wish to use state and local income tax deduction. My suggestion.

  1. Log into Turbo Tax

  2. Go to federal>deductions and Credits>estimate and other Taxes paid>show more

  3. Go to sales tax>start

  4. select skip sales tax

  5. Now if this doesn't make a difference, you will need to remove the information you recorded regarding the purchase of the vehicle.

  6. Also, keep in mind sales taxes or state and local income taxes are itemized expenses. If you are claiming a standard deduction, then sales or state and local income tax recording will not make a difference because there are not enough itemized deductions to offset your standard deduction amount.

  7. Please review this IRS link for more information about itemized expenses.

Mine is doing the same thing. I don't have any sales taxes to enter and the program is still selecting a value for Sales Tax Deduction when the State and Local Income Tax Deduction is the larger amount. There is about a $1,100 difference. I have changed it manually to State and Local Income Tax Deduction but when I get back to the deductions screen is kicks back to the Sales Tax Deduction.

Follow these steps to confirm the correct choice of state/local income tax versus sales tax deduction is made.

  1. Go back into the "Sales tax" topic
  2. Go completely through the interview
  3. Delete/blank out any entries.
  4. Be sure to go all the way through the interview section.
  5. Eventually you will end up on the comparison page again.
  6. This time select the "Back" button at the bottom of the page.
  7. Then confirm "no location" is on the next page
  8. Click "Done.
  9. Click "No" for non-taxable income.
  10. Now the "We've chosen a deduction for you" page will appear.
  11. Confirm the correct selection is made.
