2019 State refund amount put towards 2020 is incorrect

Hi,

I just completed my initial entry of all my data and I’m having a problem with my Arkansas state return.  Last year I put $1500.00 of my refund towards my 2020 state taxes.  However when I checked my state return it shows $3000.00. I’ve verified that the only estimated payment in self-employed are for my federal taxes so I’m at a loss on how to fix this.  Does anyone know how to correct this?

thanks

TurboTax transfers data from your federal return to your state return. If the information in your federal return is incomplete or incorrect, your state return won't be complete or correct either.

Before you begin troubleshooting your state return, go back through your federal return (starting at the Personal Info tab) and make sure everything's correct.

Once you're done, select the State Taxes tab and review the state section. Pay close attention to the info, especially if you made changes to your federal return. There might be new sections that need to be completed.

Sometimes changes made to your federal return won't transfer if you override information in your state return. If this happens, delete your state return and start over.

State income is doubled

State income or withholding didn't transfer

State income or withholding are wrong

For additional information refer to the following:

Correct your Federal return to carry to the state return

I had the same problem with Minnesota. The $1000 overpayment I applied from 2019 is showing up as $2000 on my 2020 form.

This has nothing to do with their federal return. Read their problem statement again; this is related to state.

If your 2019 state refunds applied to 2020 are not correct, you can edit them in the estimated tax payment screens.

Please follow the steps below:

  1. Open your tax return.
  2. Search for estimated tax payments with the magnifying glass tool on the top of the page.
  3. Click on the Jump to estimated tax payments link at the top of the search results.
  4. Scroll down to the section titled 2019 Refund Applied to 2020.
  5. Select Start for the State section.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to edit the carryforward from your 2019 return.

I am using the web (online) version of TurboTax, so this workaround does not appear to be available. The question is, why is TurboTax bringing over a wrong value from my 2019 state return in the first place?

The 2019 AGI is found on your 2019 Federal tax return Form 1040 Line 8b

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on View adjusted gross income (AGI)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
