2021 Tax Return

I filed my taxes on 2/8/22, and I mailed my return at the end of February. The IRS website is saying they don't have any information on my return. I don't know what to do because I can't get ahold of anyone.

What does that mean?   Are you saying you filed your return twice--once by efile in early February and once on paper by mail in late February?

If so, was the efile accepted?   An efiled return should show up in the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool, about 24 hours after an efiled return is accepted.  A paper return can take 4 weeks or more just to show up in the WMR tool.    Filing both (if that's what you did) may create problems/delays.

If you efiled originally, what is the status of the efile after you submitted it?  Was it successful and accepted?  Or was it rejected?

If you used Online TurboTax, you can check at the Tax Home of your Online account.  What does it show for the return--accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or what?

Here are some tips when using the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool:

https://www.irs.gov/Refunds

  • If you efiled a return, be sure you have waited at least 24 hours after acceptance before using the IRS WMR tool.   For a paper return wait at least 4 weeks after mailing to use the WMR tool.
  • Be sure you enter the correct SSN and filing status.
  • Be sure you are using only the Federal refund amount.   Do not include any state refund or any total refund or net refund (Fed and State) that TurboTax may have provided on a screen which adds/nets both refunds together.
  • Also be sure you are using the Federal amount before any TurboTax fees are taken out (if you chose that option.)
  • Look at your actual Federal return to get the Federal refund amount, i.e., your Form 1040, Line 35a.
  • You can also try phoning the IRS refund hotline.  I've seen it work for some users when the WMR tool didn't.  800-829-1954

We can tell you how to hopefully reach a live agent at the IRS if it becomes necessary.

I filed my taxes on the TurboTax website, it told me to mail in my return and W2, so I did. I mailed it at the end of February, it says that it’s ready to mail as the status. I already mailed it. I did everything it told me to do.

If you already mailed your return, then you have done everything.

It can take up to 8 weeks if you mailed your return for the IRS to process the return.

If you would like to contact the IRS, you can do so by following the instructions here

It told me to mail the return to the IRS in Missouri. Is that normal because I don’t live there?

You mail the federal tax return to an IRS Submission Center based on the state where you live.  There are only 5 IRS submission centers in the US - https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment

Like I said, it told me to mail it to Missouri. I do not live in Missouri, so I’m making sure that’s correct. I live in Tennessee.

Living in Tennessee then sending the federal tax return to Kansas City, Missouri is correct.

Mailed paper-filed returns (not e-filed) take much longer to be processed.

The IRS is backlogged with paper returns.

You should have mailed the tax return certified with a return receipt to prove it was mailed.

You will just need to be patient and what for the IRS to update your information.

Since you live in Tennessee and if you did not include a payment, your federal return should have been mailed to:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Kansas City, MO 64999-0002

No one gave me a return receipt?

The IRS does not send a receipt when they receive a tax return.

Megan if you mailed your return to the IRS it will take weeks to process.  It will not show up in any system until the information is entered.

If you file a complete and accurate paper tax return, your refund should be issued in about six to eight weeks from the date IRS receives your return. If you file your return electronically, your refund should be issued in less than three weeks, even faster when you choose direct deposit.

If you have to re-submit your return you have a copy or you can get one from TurboTax as long as you have your Log-in information.
