If you got a notice from the IRS, don’t worry. We’ll do our best to help you figure out what to do next.

The notice tells you about the 6-digit Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) and includes instructions on how to use it. This PIN is to help prevent the misuse of your Social Security number.

We will ask for the IP PIN when you prepare your tax return.

You can obtain more detailed info about the IP PIN from the IRS.

Once you have the PIN

  • under Other Tax Situations, select Other Return Info, then select Start next to Identity Protection PIN.

  • On the Add any Identity Protection PINs screen, select Add next to the spouse's name.

  • On the Add (spouse's name) IP PIN screen, enter or correct the IP PIN and select Save.

  • On the Add any Identity Protection PINs screen, select Continue.

  • Select File in the menu.

  • On the Welcome back screen, select Continue.

    • Don't select Fix my return.

  • Select Start next to Step 3 to refile your return.
