With to 1/29/22 update, my return now shows a form 4972 required because of a total distribution from my IRA. I did not take a total distribution.

Check to make sure the Total distribution is checked box is not checked accidentally while entering 1099-R form.

You could try to Delete Form 4972 from your return.

Click this link for info on How to Delete a Form in TurboTax Online.

In TurboTax Desktop, click on FORMS in the upper right, then choose 'Open Form' on the next screen above 'Forms in My Return', then 'Delete Form' at the bottom when the form opens.

You may also want to review your 1099-R entry and the follow-up questions afterward (some pop up even after selecting 'Continue' at the income topics page).

This link has instructions you may find helpful on How to Enter 1099-R.

I attempted the suggestion to delete form 4972, however the program will not let me delete it. I have also double checked and my 1099-R form is entered correctly.

I am using the Windows Desktop version of TT and have for many years. Last year I receiver my normal distribution from my IRA and this is the first time TT has used form 4972, that forces a $600 tax liability.

I think this is a “glitch” in the program with Edward Jones 1099-R forms. It is unfortunate TT makes no provision to report troubles with functionality.

I am a loss to know what to do next.

Try deleting the 1099-R and then reentering it manually.

I am having the same problem. I deleted all of my 1099-R forms and still the box on line 16 of the 1040 form shows that a form 4972 is required. None of my 1099s necessitate the filing off a form 4972. I think there is a bug in Windows Desktop TT.

I deleted all my 1099s and re-entered manually. At the end, when reviewing the return it said I had errors. One of the errors was an income amount from a 4972. When I set it to zero, the check mark for "income from a 4972" on line 16 of the 1040 form disappeared.. I'm not sure whether this is a solution or the problem was fixed under the covers.

The "Total Distribution" box is NOT checked.

I see other Members are having the same problem!

How do we escalate this problem to the "techies" who can fix it??

I have the same error.  Total distribution is not checked.

I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes on the phone with support trying many things.  No resolution.

I paid my $20 e-file fee for CT and pushed the button to file and TT won't let me file with this seemingly irrelevant error.

Now, I've paid $20 and still don't have the problem solved :(

I have tried all the suggestions offered on this thread but none have worked. I tried deleting the 1099-R but still could not delete the form 4972 that adds the $600 tax.

Today saw the 3rd update since my original post and none have corrected the problem, so obviously this venue does not get to the folks that can fix the problem.

One other observation.  The error is a catch-22.  First it says you can't leave box B blank.  Then, when I put a zero in there to get past the error, the new error says you can't have a number in B with A blank.  The problem is A is not allowing a number to be entered.   So, I take out the 0 in box B and the original error shows up again.

Lather, rinse, repeat, ...

Any way to open a ticket on this?  I paid the $20 to file my state thinking I could ignore the error and submit.  It doesn't allow me to file.  I keep waiting for a fix.  I guess I will need to figure out how to get a refund and file a paper return.

After making multiple responses to those making suggestions that did not work, and after several program updates, it became clear TT was unable/unwilling to "fix" this years version of TurboTax.

Finally I started a "NEW" tax return, using a totally  different file name, entering all the same information exactly as before. This "NEW" return, both Federal and State, completed and filed with NO errors!

I can only surmise 1 of the subsequent program update after my report, fixed the problem for all NEW

returns, but did not correct existing returns.

Unfortunately, after many years of using TT, this experience has severely affected my confidence in this software for future Tax Returns.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions!

Thanks for the update.  I already filed my federal, so it looks like I'll file my state by paper.
