Turbo tax won't let me re-enter social security income. How do I re- enter 1099 SSA?

I apparently made an error the first time I entered the information, so was trying to 'start over' by deleting the form and starting over. Now TT won't let me enter anything.

Here is the best way to get to this area in TurboTax:

  1.  Open (continue) your return, if you're not already in it.
  2. In TurboTax, search (upper right magnifying glass) for "1099 SSA" and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.

@jack Gross Try this - Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

If that does not work, please try clearing your cache and cookies. Then reboot and log back in and then see if it will allow you to use the search option.

Where do I enter an SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM, or SSA-1099-R-OP1?

Home Business Turbo Tax 2021 won't format the EIN or social security number in form 1099 even after updating the current version. The software has a bug and needs to be fixed,

When entering the EIN and the social security of the employee on form 1099, the software could not format the EIN together, it takes the number but putting the space between the numbers. After trying many times, the software asking to re-enter the number then the system prompts the error in EIN. You just need to fill out the form 1099 by yourself and you will see the bug.

In form 1099, after entering the social security number of contractor, the system asks entering the social security again for confirmation, the software makes space between numbers therefore the input is incorrect. Could not re-enter the social security number for new employee

Are you trying to enter a 1099-SSA to report Social Security Income?  If so, enter the recipient's Social Security Number; there is no EIN to be entered.

Or, are you trying to prepare a 1099-Misc/1099-NEC for a contractor or employee?

It seems that you didn’t look at the entire thread.   I am having the same issue.

when entering info for a 1099 nec form, at the SSN prompt, when you type numbers it places them in the wrong place and won’t let me renter the number either.  I’ve tried to relocate the cursor with the arrow keys but this isn’t working either.

@CoVa   You're tagging on to a thread about entering social security benefits (SSA-1099), but you're asking about a 1099-NEC.

You should start a new thread or contact TT support.

This is a user to user forum. You can probably get help from this forum by asking a specific question.

It won’t let me either in the 2021 version.  Haven’t found anyone in support who can tell me how to fix it.

Please clarify: which form are you trying to enter or re-enter, SSA-1099 (Social Security income) or 1099-NEC (self-employment income)?

@neufmeister. The best to enter is:

  1. Log into TurboTax .
  2. Click on Federal from the menu on the left-hand side and then click on Wages & Income at the top.
  3. Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security, click "Show More" and then click on "Start" to the right of Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099.)
  4. Enter the amounts from your form(s) where indicated. Net benefits go in Box 5 of the form and the income Tax Withheld will be recorded in Box 6.

I have done this, but sometimes there's like a rain drop under the line where I am to enter and it does not recognize my input.  Other times there is no rain drop but it still will not let me enter anything.

Try deleting the SSA-1099 and re-entering from the beginning.

Click this link for info on How to Delete a Form in TurboTax Online.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, click on FORMS in the upper right, choose SSA-1099 from 'Forms in My Return' and 'Delete' at the bottom of the form when it opens.

This link has instructions for How to Enter Social Security Benefits (SSA-1099).

Hello,

I'm using Tax Year 2021 DeLuxe version installed from CD in my desktop. The SSA-1099 dialog (The Interview) Box 5, and other boxes to enter benefits, do not allow typing numbers in the boxes. The boxes seem to be closed to typing any input. This should be a bug.

I think I found another bug, but it's unrelated to this thread. How can bugs be reported?

TIA

Nick

If it's not related to this thread, you can start a new one with your issue. However, try updating the software to see if that resolves the issue.

Yes, my question is related to this thread. It's about TurboTax not letting the user (me) enter the amounts that go in SSA-1099 thru the Interview

Also, when I started TurboTax, it did an online update, and said it was up to date

How can bugs be reported so they get fixed?

TIA

Before we assume it is a bug in the program let's try the steps below:

  1. Delete any reference to the SSA-1099 and then close out of TurboTax, close the browser window and then open a new browser window.
  2. After you get back into TurboTax, go to the Federal section; click on Income and Expenses;
  3. Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security and then click on the dropdown arrow and
  4. Select Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099) and
  5. Enter your SSA-1099.

If simply signing out and opening a new browser window does not work.   Shut down your computer and then restart and then go back into TurboTax and follow the steps above.

Hello.  Working on the 2021 version of the Home and Business version on Turbo Tax.  I received the cd version and loaded it onto my desktop.  I am also unable to enter in SS information, in fact, when I selected the "Update" button on the input screen on the SS line, a blank screen appears.  Any suggestions?  Perhaps a patch is necessary in the next update?

Thanks

DC

I ended up inputting the data directly into the forms.  It's disheartening that the program does not work as it should though and this is two years in a row!

All SSA-1099 forms get entered in the same place:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax, if it's not already open
  2. In the search bar, search for the term Social Security benefits and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 2021? answer Yes and select Continue
  4. On the next screen, check the box beside Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099), then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided
    • If you received multiple SSA-1099s, add up the amounts for each box and enter them together
    • Don't include SSA-1099s for dependents. Those should be reported on the dependent's return, but only if they are required to file a return (this is uncommon)
  5. Select Continue and follow the on-screen instructions
