Tax Year Prior to 2020: I didn't see a place to add my social security income. Do I not have to include it since I'm over 66 years old?

It was supposed to be entered. Did you e-file?

If you did NOT e-file yet:

Do not try to enter your SSA1099  or RR1099RB as a W-2.  Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

If you did not file your return yet, you can log back into your return and follow the steps below to add it:

1. Login to your account

2. On the left side of the screen, click Tax Tools

3. Click Tools

4. Click Topic Search, type in '1099-SSA', hit your enter button

5. Follow the prompts

If you have already filed your return you will need to file an amended return to report your social security income. If you already filed your return you will need to wait to see if it was rejected or accepted. If they were rejected you are able to login to your return to fix what you need to fix and fix the errors that caused the rejection and refile the return. If your returns were accepted, then you will need to file an amended return.

You should not try to amend your return until the original return it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.
Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original return and replace them; they are processed as two separate returns.  Amended returns have to be printed and filed by mail.  It can take the IRS up to 12 weeks or longer to process them.

If you are due a larger refund than on your original return, your amended return should only show the difference and you will receive a separate check for it.  If you owe money on your amended return, it will show only the new amount owed, you will have to mail a check with the return.

You can check the status of your amended return by clicking here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/amended-returns-form-1040-x-/wheres-my-amended-return-1

You will have to add the Social Security but you cannot amend yet.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

@080650  You have to wait until March 25 when the 1040-X form to amend your tax return is available.

Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X   --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.

Do not try to make any changes until that form is available.

The 2020 Form 1040X does not become available until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

Should I go to the IRS, since this seems to be a problem with me using Turbo Tax.

Did you enter the SSA-1099?   How is it a problem with Turbo Tax?  Does it show up on line 6a?  It might not be taxable.

Up to 85% of Social Security becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security, reaches:

Married Filing Jointly: $32,000

Single or head of household: $25,000

Married Filing Separately: 0

Do you need to amend to add it?  You should not amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.

@AONHHK do you have any other income beyond social security?  if no, you may not need to file at all.

Yes, that is my issue. I thought all the income was entered and now I see SSA was missing. I will start all over and submit a 1040-X.

@AONHHK DO NOT SUBMIT AN AMENDMENT until the original tax return processes..  it will just add to the confusion..... depending on your other income, social security income may not change your tax liability,
