I received form SSA-1099 for myself for 2022. I also received one that was addressed to both myself and my dependent, however, the dependent's name is in Box 1 of the form. The dependent did receive a W-2 for 2022. Where do I report the dependent's Net Benefits in Box 5?
If all your dependent had for income was from an SSA-1099, they would not have a filing requirement. Keep the form for your records, but you do not need to report it anywhere.
1. The 2022 form SSA-1099 for my dependent was addressed to both myself and my dependent.
2. Box 1 of that form only has my dependent's name in it
3. My dependent worked in 2022, so she received a W-2
4. Both my payment and my dependent's payment are received at the same time every month into my bank account.
Where do I need to report my dependent's SSA-1099?
Thanks!
@MxVRacer The dependent's SSA-1099 is only reported on her tax return. In box 3 of the SSA-1099 will be her Social Security number.
She completes a tax return reporting both her SSA-1099 and the W-2 on her tax return. If she can be claimed as a dependent on your tax return then she Must indicate on her return that she is a dependent.
However, if she is age 19 or older, not a full time student and her gross income in 2022 is $4,400 or more (Social Security benefits do not count) then she cannot be claimed as a dependent on your tax return.
Thanks for the prompt reply @DoninGA!
My dependent is 17 and earned about $1,000 in 2022. Given the information mentioned in this thread, do you know if I have to use TT Deluxe or can I use a free file program?
@MxVRacer For reporting a SSA-1099 and a W-2 the TurboTax Free online edition can be used.
