Are you trying to import the 1099-R?

Yes

There is no tracking ID on a 1099R.  There is a Federal ID number that you enter beneath the payer name and address, etc. A more common issue is the State ID number in Box 13.

Every payer of the retirement distribution does not obtain payer numbers for every state. If your payer has one for your state and they have withheld any state income tax, it would be listed in box 13 on the 1099-R. If there is nothing listed in the State Payer number box (box 13), you can input NA (not available) in that box in the TurboTax software.

State ID numbers are not always unique identifier as to what state they are associated with (i.e in theory, two separate states could be using the same ID number) and they are often the same as the federal ID numbers.  Thus, the program needs the State abbreviation to properly associated the 1099-R with the right state. Also, the same Federal EIN is sufficient for the state ID number.  Be sure to select your state two letter code in the state section.

If you have additional questions or details regarding this, please feel free to post in the comments for further clarification.

My 1099R does not have a tracking ID, so I tried entering the Payers TIN... that is not accepted. I've also tried "NA" for not available. Also, not accepted. Help please!

Are you trying to IMPORT the 1099 R.  You can enter it yourself by choosing I'll type it myself at the bottom of the screen.  You would then select the 1099 R section and post it.

Leave this blank  when entering the Form 1099-R.  There is no tracking ID on a 1099R. There is a Federal ID number that you enter beneath the payer name and address.   If you are trying to import the data, your payer may have their own  internal tracking ID in order to facilitate the import feature from their website.

Folks are missing the question.   When you try to import a 1099r from certain entities such as TIAA, the screen asks you to enter the "Tracking ID-Tax Info Stmt bottom pg1 (24 char)".

My 1099R's from TIAA do not have a 24 character tracking number.

The recommendations to "enter it manually" when you have a dozen 1099s to enter is not really that helpful.

Googling suggests many companies do not (yet?) use a tracking ID, even if they are supposed Turbotax partners.    So this is quite frustrating (sort of like living in a country that can't quite get enough coronavirus testing kits!).

i would suggest making up a 24 character tracking number to see if you can move past this issue if you do not wish to enter these manually.

Cute suggestion but it does not work.  TIAA denies such a number exists and yet TurboTax insists on it.

Check your contract number to see if that is what they are talking about. See if that is 24 characters long. Your contract number is either your TIAA number, your CREF number or your TIAA Mutual Fund Account number. These can be found in two places: your enrollment or mutual fund account confirmation documents or your quarterly statements.

The Payer's ID in the box labeled Payer's TIN.  See this IRS Form 1099-R - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1099r--2020.pdf

You do not enter a SSA-1099 as a Form 1099-R.  Delete the Form 1099-R

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

Has anyone figured out an answer to the original question yet? This is very frustrating. I'm trying to enter my 1099-R figures and Turbo tax insists on a 24 character Tracking ID, but tracking IDs are only on 1099-INTs. Entering the payer's federal ID number does not work. "NA" does not work. A random 24 character string does not work. Typing "ThereIsNoSuchID#onA1099R" does not work. Leaving the box empty does not work. The people who sent me the 1099 say they've never heard of anyone asking for a tracking ID on a 1099-R before. Yet Turbo Tax refuses to let me proceed until I provide this nonexistent number.

I did not realize there are several threads on this mythical tracking ID. It does not exist so there is no answer for how to find it. You can manually type in the 1099-R. Neither the program nor your tax return need a tracking ID, it seems to come into play when trying to import.

To enter the form manually, click on I'll type it in myself  (instead of selecting a brokerage) and enter the Federal ID and the rest of the information. All simple and straight forward.

You are the only person that knows what Self-Select pin you used to file last year's tax return.  It is not stored anywhere in the TurboTax program or the TurboTax cloud server.  If you are in the same account you used last year, it should transfer over.   You need one of two numbers to successfully e-file your tax return this year, either:

  • Last year's AGI or
  • Last year's Self-Select pin  (the random five-digit number that you entered as your electronic signature when you e-filed your 2020 tax return)

You only need one of those two numbers to verify your identity and e-file.   When you e-file this year, you will be prompted to enter a Self-Select for this return, tax year 2021.   You can reuse your Self-Select PIN from last year or create a new one to use.   It doesn’t matter which option you choose.    @ROD J COLLINS

Do not be in a rush to get your tax return filed today or even this week.   The IRS will not start processing returns until the end of this month.   And if you transmit your e-file, you won't be able to make any changes until the IRS starts accepting and either accepts it or rejects it.    If they do accept it as you filed it and you need to then make a change, you will have to amend your tax return.   You want to avoid amending if at all possible.

What is the difference between the five-digit Self-Select PIN I created last year and my Self-Select PIN this year?
