How do i get a copy of my 1099 or 1040 and do i have to file first ...

Your 1040 is created when you begin your return. What type of 1099 are you referring to?

There are more than a dozen kinds of 1099's, so we cannot tell you where to get a copy unless we know what kind you mean.

 

.  A 1099NEC is typically issued by an individual or business for whom you performed work as an independent contractor, so seek a copy from them if you did not save yours.  Many of the other types of 1099's are issued by banks, brokerages and other financial institutions from which you can seek copies.

 

 

 

A 1040 is the tax return form you prepare here to send to the IRS.   If you start entering data in this software you are preparing a Form 1040.   Please look at it so you will know what you are sending to the IRS:

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
