Earlier in the month when I was working on my taxes, my tax return was over $10K, now that I've gone back in it's only $4K. What happened?

There were likely programming updates in the meantime.  The refund number is not accurate until you have completely finished.

I suspect what you saw earlier were "Tax Breaks" of  a Personal Exemption ($4,050) plus the Standard Deduction ($6,350 for Single) = $10,400. Those are subtractions from income before the taxes are calculated, not tax credits or a refund.
