In the Personal Income section, Add Investments, Stocks, we need a way to delete a previous empty entry. Can TT please add a way to do that? Also, section gets hung alot.

If one clicks on the "down arrow", you can "Edit", but not delete. Please add a "Delete Entry" option. Also, after answering the last question about "did you purchase all these", after you hit NO and go to the next page, the program often hangs. Not complaining, just offering constructive criticism that, hopefully, is easy to fix or embrace. Thanks.

When you see an investment sale that you entered, you should see an edit option in addition to a delete option, which will be the trash can icon next to where it says Edit:

Hi Thomas,

Thanks, but there is no trash-can option anywhere along this entry (I sure wish there was!).

Let me try to better explain this again:

Go to the "Your 2024 Income Summary" page.

click on "Investment Income"

click <Update> across from "Stocks, Crypto ,,"

That will take you to a page headed by "Let's Finish pulling in your investment income."

Below which I see a list of my brokerages entries. I want to totally & completely erase one of these entries.

The only option shown is a "down arrow" across from the entry name. When I click on that, it gives a short-summary and only an "Edit" button (no trash can or "Delete" option). So, I click Edit (the only choice it gives me). It goes all thru the questions again and I'll end up with the entry that I didn't want in the first place, with no trash can along the way.

Hope this helps. Sure would be nice to clean this up. Thanks in advance for a fix!

Best regards,

Mike

After you click on Edit, do you not get any trash can icons?   Are you using TurboTax Online?   You can delete the entries by deleting the forms also.

Hi Dawn,

There is one trash can at the end of the trail I just described. I clicked it, and it zeros out the entry, but it does not delete the TOP-level entry on the "Your 2024 Income Summary" page, which is what I am trying to do. I want to *totally* delete that record.

Yes, I am using TT, updated, on a Mac (just like I have for years). I use TT locally after I update it.

From the "Your 2024 Income Summary" webpage, the "down arrow" goes to a short-summary page with (only ...) and "Edit" Button. If a "Delete" button were added there, it was save sooo much time and enable users to keep this page clean. Right now, I have an entry I cannot get rid of and will be very interested to see how that prints out a .pdf if it doesn't get fixed. I refuse to start over from scratch, which - from what I can tell - is the only way to get rid of it.

I'll guess I'll have to wait until someone else can describe the problem better as apparently my description was either too complicated or hard to follow. Thanks, though.

Best regards,

Mike

p.s. - that said, what I am asking for (and others will no doubt bump into this too...) should be very easy to implement. From the To

Hi Dawn,

I just realized that the graphics you attached to your reply don't look anything like what I am seeing. You asked if I was using TT "online" and my answer was not clear. What I do fire-up TT and download the latest version. Then I will typically work on my taxes *offline*. Is it possible that TT has two versions?? One for those working online and one for those working offline? Boy, if that's true, this is a game changer in how I view the product. Has it been this way for years and I just never knew it? WHY two different versions? Seems like that would be a mess to maintain. So, with respect to my previous emails, if there is anyway you could debug the problem by working "offline" as I am, that would be great. As I mentioned before, the fix for this should be relatively easy. If no fix, my plan is that I will have to fix the final .pdf ... the inability to delete the entry will make no difference tax-wise, I just like to turn-in a clean return, and having an empty entry isn't a good look. Thanks.

Yes, there are two main versions of TurboTax - one that you access via a browser by logging into TurboTax.com. The other is a downloaded program that you install on your personal computer.

Screens in TurboTax can vary and troubleshooting these issues are difficult in the Community forum. You may consider upgrading to TurboTax Live. This online service provides step-by-step guidance from a tax expert whenever you need assistance, either over the phone or by screensharing. The time you save may be worth the additional cost.

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for your reply, and I understand what you are saying. That said, my real question was, if I ordered the downloadable version, does that version perform differently depending on whether or not I am "online" (i.e. the program can communicate with TT via the internet while I am working) or if I am "offline", (i.e. there is no connection to TT via the internet). My assumption is that the program itself should perform the same either way. Can you or anyone there confirm that my assumption is correct?

Regardless, as a consumer who bought the downloadable version so that I can work on my taxes even when I don't have a connection to the internet, I expect TT customer service to support that product. In that light, the instructions I gave in previous emails should enable a TT person to recreate and troubleshoot the problem that I described fairly easily, and to initiate a fix with the developers who write the code. As I said, it should be a simple fix and be beneficial to the TT users that have also bought the downloadable version, and my guess is that there will be others that will desire a simple way to delete an unwanted entry.

The only thing I should have mentioned before is that my brokerage transactions are greater than a handful, so I am using the "Totals" method instead of the individual entry method. Regardless, I am wanting to totally delete the very top-level brokerage entry. Thanks in advance for any support.

Best regards,

Mike

Also, is there any way to turn off these "badges", for which I keep getting a ton of emails about and I don't even understand why or how they are helping me? For instance, can I get a discount on TT next year if I reach a certain level or something? If not, and no one can explain the benefits to me, I would like those notifications to be turned off, please. Thanks.

Best regards,

Mike

As far as I know, a delete option has not been added. The good news is that when I export to a .pdf for the actual tax return, there is no empty entry, so apparently the program is smart enough to ignore the empty entry.  That said, it would be nice if the delete option was added, but I've done all I can do to make that happen and have nothing more to contribute to the issue. Thanks.

The inability to simply DELETE stock/bond entries is just AWFUL. Not only can you not simply delete an entry at the top level, now I find out you cannot even delete entries at the line item level.

I have multiple accounts at the same brokerage firm, and if I make the slightest error in any individual entry (which is easy to do given how the screen behaves), there is NO WAY to simply delete the entry (!!). This is unbelievable.

In addition, the lack of customer service attention to this very important issue is also rather astounding considering I have given detailed instructions how to recreate the problem. No one has tried to do it, and, apparently - it is all my fault. Yet I am a *very* experienced TT user and have never had this issues in the past. This software is a disaster and if these problems are fixed ASAP I will never buy TT again.

Perhaps if TT worked as hard on *fixing* these simple problems instead of emailing me "badges", I wouldn't have to spend so much of my time emailing to get basic problems fixed.

Add to that how bad the Intuit Home page is designed and this is just a mess. Sometimes it's hard to even log-in and get to this thread! Instead I am asked this idiotic survey about what product I need when I have already bought and downloaded TT for 2024 already (!). The homepage should be completely redesigned imho.

Adding all this together and the goal certainly appears to make *everything* so complicated for any use that wants to download TT to a desktop on work on his/her taxes offline sooooo difficult and exasperating as to make them buy some other version of TT instead or to hire a TT "expert" to do the taxes for them. Well, all you are doing with me is driving me away to a competitor. Heck, I have spent 10x the time on my taxes this year than last year's TT and I still haven't even got all my brokerage statements yet. I could have done this by HAND and spent less time. What a friggin' disaster.

I have a 'trash can' icon next to the Edit option, however when I click on the trash can to delete it does not do anything.  I have entered something in error and I want to delete the entire investment entry

I am having the same problem.  I entered 5 valid entries in commerce sales and 1 incorrect entry.  I want to delete the incorrect entry but the only trashcan available is to delete all the entries.  I am unable to find how to delete just the one erroneous entry.  Your recommendation to update to live and speak with an expert is not an acceptable answer.  I believe there is something wrong with the program.  How do you escalate this issue to a programmer who can make a fix for this issue?

I am having the same problem - seeing a trash can icon, clicking on it and nothing happens except for the page flashing.  Please fix this as I cannot file my taxes without being able to delete some entries as the Federal Review points out errors in these erroneous accounts.

The following information should allow you to delete entries and/or forms you want to remove.

  • If you're using TurboTax Online software and need to delete a form, click here.
  • If you're using TurboTax Desktop software and need to delete a form, click here.

The Trash Can icon does not work. The screen just turn grey and nothing happen. You clicked the CONFIRM button on the bottom to clear the grey screen but nothing is done. Please fix this problem ASAP!!!

Also, each time you click the down arrow to see the details of one investment TurboTax scrolls back to the top which is annoying, Maybe you can fix that too.

was it imported? then a different method must be used. After opening the return click on the file tab. you should see a line that says "remove imported data" click on it and select what to remove

I was entering the data manually at first with summary of trades. Turbotax wants me to mail my statement to IRS. So I imported the data from my brokerage account. Now I need to delete the ones that I entered, not imported. The Trash Can icon does not work. (Mac, Deluxe version)

Also @susannawtang

This won't "fix" the software problem, but may achieve the results you want--depending on what all you are trying to do.   There are multiple users in this thread, so it gets confusing.   I don't think you've mentioned if you have gone into Forms Mode and tried to correct anything there.

Since you have the desktop version, have you gone into Forms Mode?   There in the list of forms you should be able to choose and delete the type of investment form for a specific payer you don't want; i.e, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, etc.    Or if necessary, sometimes a form can be edited in Forms Mode--either on the form itself or its respective worksheet.

Online TurboTax users have to use a different method to delete forms.

I can go to the forms I want to delete listed under Schedule B in the Forms menu but cannot find a REMOVE or DELETE option. Please advice. Thanks.

If you are using Windows, you should see a delete option below the form:

If using a Mac computer, you may need to go to the Forms menu and select Remove (Form Name).

Did you see the last sentence that @ThomasM125  provided you above for Mac?  i.e., to go to the Forms menu and Remove it?   Or could you not find and use that instruction?     I don't have a Mac, so hopefully someone can assist you further.
