Do I need turbo tax premier to file stock? I never invested more than $175 in stock. Do I still need to file that?

If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Freedom edition which is free to file both a federal and state tax return.  The Freedom edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2017 federal and state tax returns in Freedom Edition, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2017 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $33,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2017 AGI of $66,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

Did you sell any stock in 2017?  If not and you did not receive a Form 1099-B from the brokerage account then you have nothing to enter on a tax return concerning the stock.  You would not need to upgrade to the Premier edition.

I did. I just got my 1099 form. Is there any way I could file it without having to purchase Premier? Robinhood gave me a $15 discount and I think there may be a military discount, but I would prefer to not pay to file what equates to such a small investment.
