How do I install TurboTax Desktop?

There are two ways to install TurboTax Desktop:

  • Insert a physical CD into your computer.
  • Download the software from Intuit or the retailer you bought it from (like Amazon, Costco, or Staples).

If you bought the CD but your computer doesn't have a CD drive, you can use the downloadable software instead.

Before installing TurboTax, it's best to close any open programs, including firewall and virus-protection programs.

Start by putting the CD into your computer drive. It may take up to 4 minutes for the first screen to appear.

If installation doesn't start after 4 minutes, follow these steps:

  1. Hold down the Windows+R keys to open the Run window.
  2. Select Browse, and then find the TurboTax CD on your CD/DVD/RW drive (usually Drive D).
  3. Double-click the setup.exe file to begin the installation.

Before installing TurboTax, it's best to close any open programs, including firewall and virus-protection programs.

  1. Insert your CD into your Mac's CD drive or double-click your TurboTax download's .dmg file, which will mount a virtual drive on your desktop. The drive should automatically open.
  2. Follow the directions to drag TurboTax to Applications in the pop-up window.

Once you’ve received an order confirmation for your purchase, follow these instructions to download your TurboTax software:

  1. Go to Access my downloads and sign in with the same user ID you used to purchase your software.
  2. On Your TurboTax account, select Downloads.
  3. Select the version you want to download and save it somewhere on your computer where you can find it.
  4. Install your software by double-clicking the downloaded file.

If you don’t see your product in Downloads, go to the Intuit account recovery page and enter your email address to find other user IDs associated with your email. Your download might be in one of your other accounts.

  1. Go to Access my downloads and sign in.
  2. Select Downloads.
  3. Get the license code.
  4. Scroll down the screen until you see Did you order a TurboTax product that you don’t see listed above? then select Enter your license code here.
  5. Enter your license code from your CD or download.
  6. Under Which operating system do you use?, select the operating system for the version you wish to install, either PC/Windows or Mac.
  7. Select Get Download to download your new version.
