After you file
You should wait until your tax return is fully processed before filing an amended return (Form 1040X). If you have a refund due from the return you mailed wait until you receive it prior to sending/submitting your amended return.
If your return is pending, here's what you can do:
- Find out if you even need to amend
- Check your e-file status. It usually takes 24-72 hours for your return to be accepted by the IRS
We recommend that you wait to file your amendment until you have received your refund or three weeks from the date of payment of taxes due.
