Get your taxes done using TurboTax

You can amend your daughter's return a little later.   Your own return will have to be printed, signed and mailed.  As annoying as this is, it is very common when you have a teenager or student filing a first tax return.  They do not understand the question about whether they can be claimed as someone else's dependent or they are full of "I make my own money now.." etc. etc. etc.

And anyhow----you are referring to a 2018 return which cannot be e-filed now anyway.  E-fling for 2018 returns has been closed since mid-October of 2019.  You could have mailed your 2018 return months ago.  Since October 15, 2019, the ONLY way you could file a 2018 return is by mail.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Did your child use TurboTax?  If so, the two of you need to sit down at the computer together and use the recovery tool to find her return.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

If she did not use TurboTax, have a conversation to figure out what software she used so that her incorrect return can be amended.  Or someday you will both get letters from the IRS to sort out whether she should have said she could not be claimed.  (The IRS might take note of her age and figure it out....)

The other way to get a copy of her return if you cannot get it through the tax software, is to pay the IRS $50 for a copy.  Paying the $50  and preparing  an amended return might make a lasting impression on her.

Request a form 4506 to get an exact copy of a tax return.  Then work from it to prepare a 1040X to amend.
