The fees are based on which version of the software you used, how many state returns you prepared in addition to the federal return, and on how many "add-on" features you chose, along with whether you chose to use "refund processing" to pay your fees from your federal refund. When you make that choice, you pay an extra fee of $39.99 (or $44.99 in CA) to have the third party bank receive your refund, extract your fees and send you the rest.
