I used TurboTax 2019 to complete my taxes. However, when adding info from my 1099-Q (Payments from Qualified Education Programs/529 Plan), I never got a question from TT for how to handle room and board for my two college kids (in some situations it can be taxable; in others situations it may not be). After filing my 2019 taxes I saw many similar comments online about how there is a bug in TT for how it handles 1099-Q forms, and that users in this situation should enter "$0" even if they received a 1099-Q. Would have been helpful if TT asked leading questions so users would know how to handle this situation so they weren't overpaying on taxes. I now need to file an amended return so that the room and board isn't taxed (as it should not have been). If anyone has any suggestions for how to best handle this, please pass along.
Are you saying, you already filed and you reported part of your 1099-Q as taxable income (line 8 of Schedule 1)? And this was because you didn't claim Room & Board?
On an amended return, you change line 8 to zero.
To get the screen to enter Room & Board, answer yes when asked if you have book expenses.
