Major tax reform and major changes in the tax forms have also resulted in changes to the tax software.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a little “postcard-size” Form 1040 that has six extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.

If you qualify to use it, there is another free version of the software:

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $34,000 or less, or $66,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

Note:  If you do not qualify to use Free File then you will have to upgrade to Deluxe or higher in the paid versions of the software.

 Online Deluxe $39.99  State software $39.99

 If you choose “refund processing” to have fees deducted from federal refund, add another $39.99  ($44.99 in CA)

Or did you add a feature that you want to remove?

If you have any of the new Schedules 1-6, you cannot use Free Edition.  See the Answer below to see if you qualify for the other free product--TurboTax Free File Program--which can handle all the usual Federal forms if you meet ONE of the qualifications to use it.

I have Turbotax Premier and still am having the hardest time trying to find Schedule 5.  I have a tax credit I need to claim for compensation I paid back to my employer but TurboTax doesn't seem advanced enough to handle this credit. Very frustrated customer.

@davidahodge
This is an old answered thread about Free Edition users who need one of the Schedules that cannot be prepared in Free Edition.  TurboTax Premier can prepare Schedule 5.   You should start your own thread so it will show up to the whole forum as needing help and where you can be interrogated about your situation.   You can probably get help in this forum.  If you don't receive help in the forum, we can tell you how to phone TurboTax Support on Monday.

You should start your own new thread at the link below so it will show up to the whole forum as needing help.

When you go to the form at the link, the first box is for a summary of your question, like a title, and is limited to 170 characters..  If you need more room, lower on the form you will come to another box with plenty of room to enter details.  This is a public Internet forum, so don't post any personal info.
