Does amending my return affect my refund?

by TurboTax1241 Updated 1 month ago

If you're not sure if you need to amend your return, see Do I need to amend my return? If you’re wondering about amending a return with a refund, read on.

You can amend your return after you get a refund. The IRS wants you to wait until you've received your tax refund before amending.

Amending your return won't hold up your original refund.

Wait until you get your original refund before filing an amendment. If your amendment results in a second refund, you'll get a check for the extra amount.

If amending your return results in an amount owing, you'll need to pay along with your e-filed or mailed amendment form.

If you're amending a tax return for 2021 or later and filing electronically, you can get your refund by direct deposit.

Three weeks after you submit your amendment, you can start tracking its progress at the IRS: Where's My Amended Return? Allow 8 to 12 weeks for your Form 1040-X to be processed.
