Why does starting my state tax return change my refunds received for state/local tax returns on my federal form?

The amount on my 1099-G does not match the amount on my federal return once I start my state tax return.

If you have not filed yet, this Turbo Tax FAQ will show you how to get back to the section to edit your 1099-G. Edit or add a 1099-G

There was an issue where TurboTax was doubling the amount for state refund received for previous year.  If that is the change you are referring to, here is the work around for that issue.   If something else is happening, please post exactly what is changing.

Go to Federal

  1. Wages and Income
  2. Other Common Income
  3. Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns
  4. Revisit
  5. Delete the entry there
  6. Enter your state refund again.

If all three of the following are true, your refund counts as taxable income:

You itemized deductions last year, instead of taking the standard deduction

You claimed state and local income taxes (not general sales taxes)

Claiming the deduction helped you increase your federal refund or lower your tax bill
