Why are you entering child support?  Child support is not taxable and is not supposed to be entered on a tax return.  It is also not deductible for the person who is paying child support.

Because it required it after it asked if I received child support or foster care payments while completing the information for Home Heating Credit.

Child support is not taxable. However, it is included in the calculation of Total Household Resources. Total Household Resources are used to determine eligibility for the Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim and Home Heating Credit Claim. 2023 MICHIGAN Home Heating Credit Claim MI-1040CR-7

To qualify for the credit your income should be within the limits in Table A and Table B

Most probably you saw your refund went down because you didn't qualify got the Home Heating credit.
