Here's Tax Topic 152 from the IRS:

The IRS issues more than 9 out of 10 refunds in the normal time frame: less than 21 days. However, incomplete or inaccurate tax returns may require further review and could take longer than the normal processing time.

IRS representatives can research the status of your return only if:
  • It's been more than 21 days since you received your e-file acceptance notification,
  • It's been more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return, or
  • The Where's My Refund?

Processing times may take longer under the following circumstances:
  • Refunds from amended returns are generally issued within 16 weeks.
  • If you filed an injured spouse claim, refer to Topic 203 for more information.
  • For refund claims with an application for an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) attached, refer to Topic 857 for more information.
  • If you requested a refund of tax withheld on a Form 1042-S (PDF) by filing a Form 1040NR (PDF), allow up to 6 months from the original due date of the 1040NR return or the date you actually filed the 1040NR, whichever is later, to receive any refund due.

You can also refer to Topic 303 for a checklist of common errors made when preparing your tax return and for additional items that may delay the processing of your return.

Topic 152 – Refund Information. Taxpayers have three options for receiving their individual federal income tax refund:

  • direct deposit (electronic funds transfer) into a checking or savings account, including an individual retirement arrangement (IRA);
  • purchase of U.S. Series I Savings Bonds; or.
  • paper check.

I don't know where you're seeing it, but it means you have to choose how you want to receive your refund.  Did you choose it in Turbo Tax?

I filed and mine was accepted on Jan 30th. I have a simple return. Never had issues in previous years and now it looks like mine is stuck....It has not been processed as it usually is in a matter of a few days. I have that code at the bottom as well.  Has anyone called them about theirs? It says you need to wait 21days..

So is it a standard message 152?

It means nothing. We all flipped out last year and I got my return 3 weeks later.

So it can process for days without being received bu the IRS, haven’t received a email stating it was approved or rejected. I am confused

Your desired message is "accepted" not "approved". You won't get a message stating approved. If you go to the IRS website, you can look for a status of approved. At that point your refund will be on its way within the week on the next weekly cycle date.

I am still waiting for my refund, it's been more than the 21 days and they are not accepting calls. When I check the status it says they can't process at this time and it has Tax Topic 152, what does this mean? Is there anything that I need to do?

You do not need to do anything.

Tax Topic 152 just means the IRS is taking a bit longer to process your return.

Thanks, is that usual?  What would be the reason for this?

Truthfully, nothing has been usual this season.  The IRS is stretched thin at this point with the social distancing requirements and the stimulus payments.

Attached is a link that indicates what the IRS is functioning with at this point in time.  As the social distancing requirements are eased, they will also be able to resume normal operations and get everything processed.

Tax Topic 152: We (possibly made an error)

that will need a further look. They(IRS employees) usually fixed the errors within 10-14 days(after their 21 days period....,then additional 14 days). After then call them for more information. (If you did not already received a letter yet in the mail).

thank you for clarifying the 152 code by IRS I am aware of this code. The question was.  when I did  the taxes, did not see well, as soon as I did send it to the IRS I received 2 checks for the 2 of us for  a total 1200, same amount of the refund if that ever occurs. my worry is were those checks already reflected on my tax papers  and is that why  it is taking so long for the IRS to refund/thank you
