What do I do if I think I made a mistake on my return?

First you will need to wait and see if your return is Accepted or Rejected by the IRS. If the return is Rejected you can go back in and fix the mistake without amending. If the return is Accepted you will need to WAIT until you receive your refund and then Amend. What mistake do you think you made?

As @SherekaB stated, if you have already filed your return, you must wait until it's either accepted or rejected to make any changes. If you did not file the return yet, it's possible that you entered your income information incorrectly. You can click here for instructions to edit your W-2(s). This only applies if you have not filed the return yet.

If you put in the wrong account information, the bank will reject the refund and the IRS will issue you a check in the mail.

You can contact the IRS by clicking here, and they can see if the bank rejected the deposit.

Yes because I shouldn’t have owed anything I didn’t not receive 3 stimulus checks and I said no but I received 2 and that was the mistake

@Tabb  After the IRS has processed your return and you have received your refund or paid the tax due then you should amend the return.  Log back in to your account and click on the 'amend my return' button for the 2021 return and then change the information that you need to change.

@jrkolarik60

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

 If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

  Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until late February.

Unless you were completing the Form 1040 by hand, you cannot enter an amount on Line 25d.  Line 25d is the Total of Lines 25a through 25c.

What is the problem you are having with the Form 1040?

It was accepted by IRS but just got letter needing to support amount of withholding entry of $$$ on line 25d of form 1040SR. I entered an xtra 0 which showed larger withholding.
