TPG has taken most of my tax return.

I did my taxes, and they were adjusted due to me putting in the wrong amount which I understand and I CALLED AND CONFIRMED with them how much I was going to get back from them after the adjustment. We have no offsets and we do not pay child support so there was no reason for money to be missing. The money sent to TPG was over 6000$ but TPG decided to take most of it and send me only 2,000$ that is not okay and I'm beyond upset this is ridiculous and I want the money I was supposed to recieve because again I confirmed with the IRS the amount I was supposed to receive. I want my money turbo tax and tpg! I wi no longer be using turbotax in future years due to this experience. Basically stealing people's money. I want my money returned to me.

In this public forum, we cannot diagnose why your refund has been reduced.  For additional information, please see this Help Article or this TurboTax blog post.

If you requested to have the TurboTax account fees deducted from your federal tax refund, the IRS will send the refund to a third party processor to have the fees and the service charge deducted. The third party processor will deduct the TurboTax fees plus the service charge and then attempt to direct deposit the remaining refund balance into the account that you entered on your tax return.

For the status of your tax refund you will need to contact the third party processor, Santa Barbara Tax Product Group, using their website - https://www.sbtpg.com/

The same happened to me.according to IRS I'm supposed to get 9279$, but only got 8537$ . TPG took 219$ fees for turbotax,TurboTax, because my refund wasn't issued in April when those fees were due, TurboTax took it out if ny checking account- so not only did they now paid twice,my refund is still short nearly 800$! I'm beyond upset and need a definite answer, solution and- my money!

@userbibicaldwell - there may be two issues here.  but let's assume the fees were correct for a moment.

1) what was the EXACT amount missing?  Seems that is 9279 - 8537 or $742 and then add back the 219, so the missing money is $961

2) any chance the IRS made an adjustment? Every adjustment on these boards relate to the Child Tax Credit or the Recovery Rebate Credit. have you checked your transcript?

3) what is on Line 28 of Form 1040 of your tax return?

4) what is on Line 30 of Form 1040 of your tax return?

let's start there.  if you post back the answers to my questions, we can probably figure this out.

Line 28 and 30 don't have anything in it and there was also no adjustment by the IRS . Child tax credit doesn't apply to me,neither the recovery rebate. 🤷‍♀️

@userbibicaldwell

Did  you have a refund advance by any chance ?    Not only thru TT but possibly another income tax program or service ?   If so the processing bank collects for all outstanding refund  loans  as well as other  possible bank debt claims from this or prior tax years.

No,I did not.

@userbibicaldwell - wow, so we have eliminated an adjustment from the IRS and we've eliminated refund loans....and the IRS number you quoted - $9279 - that came from your transcript on IRS.gov?????

if so, best to start with Turbo Tax (since I think you are stating that the fees were charged twice)

Turbo Tax has nothing to do with the refunds at all ... if you had the fees withheld from the federal refund then only the third party processing bank handles that situation so it is they you must deal with.   They must have a reason as to what happened to the rest of the refund.  If the TT fees were withheld from your bank account then only the bank processing fee would have been withheld when the IRS finally released the refund.  The processing bank has as standing arrangement with other processing banks and financial institutions  to "grab"  refunds to satisfy non income tax debts such as back mortgage payments, current or prior year refund loans or fees as well as a variety of other financial debts.  Only they can tell you what happened and you should have gotten a letter of explanation in the mail or an email so check your spam folders or contact the processing bank.

Thanks for the links. That's what I thought, that I need to deal with TPG, going to contact them. And,no,I didn't get a letter of explanation or ANYTHING for that matter from them. That is,why I'm so frustrated and now need to hunt down my money...grrrrrr

@@Critter-

<<The processing bank has as standing arrangement with other processing banks and financial institutions  to "grab"  refunds to satisfy non income tax debts such as back mortgage payments, current or prior year refund loans or fees as well as a variety of other financial debt>>

is this published anyware.  I'd be SHOCKED if this were true (I used to work in Banking).  Obviously the fees related to the tax processing are disclosed but I suspect there are a variety of regulatory discloure requirements that SBTG would have to provide and before deducing any other fee or debt beyond those related to the Turbo Tax Services.  There are a myriad of regulatory disclosures necessary to be a debt-collector ("mortage payments", "refund loans").  If it were not disclosed, the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Board) would be all over this in a heartbeat.

I used to work for H&R Block and the RAL/RAC bank forms had that info listed in the FINE print and I made sure that I told all my customers that I could not talk out of that choice that this was a possibility.   Save a PDF of the return with the worksheets and read all of the terms of the RAC agreement... you may be surprised.

So,apparently the amount was reduced by 741$ cause of an issue/error that was in 2019 with my spouse's taxes, who cause of being retired doesn't even need to pay taxes. Back then, they assured her,it was resolved,a mistake on their side but it's not on file with TPG,that's why they reduced my tax refund ( filed jointly)- now we are working on getting the missing amount issued🙄
