Tax Year Prior to 2020: Should I bother amending an accepted filing after receiving a 1099-DIV that does not change my return amount?

Should I bother amending an accepted filing after receiving a 1099-DIV that does not change my return? I waited and thought I received all additional 1099-INT, MISC and DIV but I was wrong.

Its a 1099-DIV for a large sum of $3 and it didn't change (reduce) my refund. I know the IRS will receive a copy as well but is it something I need to be **bleep** about?

Thanks!

No, you do not have to file an amendment. In this case, the amended return would be in the amount of $0 and is not required. I would advise you to keep the 1099-DIV with your tax records, just in case the IRS ever sends you a notice asking about the missing form.

However, if the amended return results in any taxable difference, then you should file to avoid any interest or penalties. For instructions see our How to amend instructions.

I didn't file with turbo tax last year, and forgot to give my 1099-DIV forms to my private tax accountant. I don't know if it will change my return from last year. I've been told I can't claim in this years tax return, but should I just keep the forms with my 2017 taxes, or fill out a 1040X and mail it in.

@Williams1958 If it affects your tax liability, you will want to amend 2017 (or give it to your accountant to check).  If it does not affect your tax liability, then the answer posted by HollyP above will also apply to you.
