Since the IRS is issuing what you paid in taxes on unemployment back, is there a way to track and find out what you are now getting back?

I know the IRS said they will automatically issue returns for unemployment if you already filed your taxes but haven’t seen if there was a way to track and find out how much you are getting back.

This would be an additional tax refund, and it would have to be recalculated based on your tax return.

If your good at math you can try to follow this.

  • Line 15 is taxable income
  • Subtract the lesser of
    • The amount you got from Unemployment, or
    • $10,200
  • This will give you your new taxable income.
  • Based on your filing status (single, married etc.)
  • Lookup your tax in the tax table
  • 2020 Instruction 1040 TAX AND EARNED INCOME CREDIT TABLES (irs.gov)
  • This should be less than line 16
  • line 16 minus the number you calculated equals what you should get back.
