Please contact IRS e-file payment services at 1-888-353-4537. Representatives are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week to assist you with your duplicate payment.

I paid the amount due on my 1040 two times by accident on April 12. I never contacted the IRS about this; I was planning to get around to it eventually. On April 28 the IRS mailed me a check for the complete extra amount paid, with no explanatory letter.

To call the IRS:IRS:  800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri

Listen to each menu before making the selection.

First choose your language. Press 1 for English.

Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".

Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".

Then press 3 "for all other questions."

Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

In most cases, the IRS will automatically refund the extra payment as long as both payments were clearly marked for the same tax year and the taxpayer does not owe any additional funds for other years.

It may take a bit of time, especially under current conditions, to see the refund.

You can also write to the IRS - but at this time I do not recommend this as their backlog of mail is reported to exceed ten million pieces at the moment.

If possible, you may wish to see if your bank can cancel one of the payments in the mean time.

I have the same situation.  Did you ever get yours resolved?

Calling the IRS is a exercise in futility.  Its no wonder the government is in debt up to its eyeballs.  Pathetic joke

Hi, I made a mistake and paid my taxes for 2022 twice.

I paid $944 on 4/15/2022.

I also paid on the 3/26/2022.

How can I get a refund for the second payment?

Did you really  make 2 estimated payments for the 2022 tax year ?    Or was one for the balance due on the 2021 return(3/26)   and one for the 2022 estimate (4/15) ?

if you did pay your 2021 taxes twice. you file in 2022 for 2021 taxes. eventually, the IRS will catch this and send you a check. how long this will take is unknown.  if the second payment was in fact indicated for 2022, there's no way to get it back. you can take credit for it when you file your 2022 return in 2023

thank you so much, this was so helpful. I called the IRS using your prompt guidance and confirmed I don't have to do anything and the IRS will automatically issue me a refund for paying my taxes twice accidentally! crossing my fingers I get the refund sooner than later.

@dcamm78 Just checking to see if the IRS did in fact mail you the check? If so, how long did it take?

I also paid twice as at first they rejected my return and turbo tax said they won’t send the payment so I had to file for extension and paid again on IRS site. But TurboTax sent the payment as well. This was on April 18, anyone got a check back yet not sure if it’s worth sitting on the phone with them.

xmasbaby0 - you are amazing!  I don't know how you figured this out, but I followed your directions, and in about 4 minutes I was connected with a very kind IRS agent named Mr. Matthews.  He took my information, went offline to research it, came back in a couple of minutes and solved my problem perfectly.  I have spent a crazy amount of time going through menu after menu, trying to reach a real person, so don't give up, try this, it works.  (I'm keeping it for future reference, just in case :-))

This sequence actually worked. At the end of the last selection it will ask if none of the previous scenarios apply to you. Just say whatever answer fits your situation.

Replying to this thread since there was some helpful information for a situation I found myself in. For background, I owed ~$4000 this year (2024) and prepared my taxes with Turbotax. Not realizing I had already set an auto payment date from my bank account for this owed taxes through Turbotax, I paid using the PayUSATax website for the amount owed. Several days later, my bank account was also debited from the auto payment through TurboTax for the same amount of another $4000. That is essentially a full month's take-home pay for me which was not ideal. I called the IRS using the prompts that someone above posted:

"To call the IRS:IRS: 800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri

Listen to each menu before making the selection.

Note: some of the later prompts have changed but basically if you stay on the line long enough you can talk to an agent. If you call later in the day, the wait times may be so long that the system won't even put you in the queue and tell you to call back another time. I recommend calling as early in the morning as possible.

I thought that my money would be automatically sent back to me. I was wrong. More or less, after a month of not receiving any correspondence from the IRS, I called in to speak with an agent about the double payment. They had several ID verification items, as well as wanted to know the accounts from which the payments were made which they made me verify the account numbers and the dates of the transactions, etc. They could see on their end that I had paid twice for my accepted return but was not able to instantly issue the money back to me. The agent was nice, but all they could tell me was "if you don't receive a refund in the mail or hear from us in 4-6 weeks give us a call back". My first call to them was in mid-May 2024. I didn't hear anything back or receive a refund so I called again at the end of June 2024. Ironically, they had issued my refund the day before I called the second time and was in the mail. I received a check a couple days later. Bonus, they even paid me interest on my overpayment even though it was my error :). However, for the added headache and stress I would not do again.

All in all it took about 2.5 months to get my money back after the second double payment. I'd recommend calling ASAP to verify your ID and make sure the IRS can see your overpayment and is planning on issuing your money back. They did not give me an option to wire or electronically transfer the payment back to my account and I received a physical check the mail. Hope this helps if anyone ends up in a similar situation as myself.

Also Intuit team (Turbotax), I recommend making it more apparent and easier for scheduled payments to be seen on the user interface for you product after you file. I paid twice because once it was scheduled it's not very easy to tell that it has been done in the current user interface system.
