PayPal would not be one of the options for getting your federal tax refund. The different options available are:

  • Direct Deposit
  • Buy U.S. Savings Bonds
  • Apply your refund to next year's taxes

What are the different options for getting my federal tax refund

Then why does the website for my prepaid paypal debit card say we can? And how do i fix that now that my taxes were accepted?

Did you receive that email from TurboTax or from Paypal?

I recieved the email from Turbo Tax. But when i go into my paypal prepaid master card account this is located in my notifications:

Get your tax refund faster1 than a paper check!

Direct Deposit your refund to your PayPal Prepaid Mastercard® at no cost2. and you'll get your tax refund faster1 than a paper check. Just enter the Routing and Account Number when you file your taxes, or provide them to your file preparer.

And then it gives me my routing number and account number.

In order to have your refund deposited to the PayPal account, you would need the routing and account number for that account. You would need to put that information in during the "refund method" selection before efiling. If you have already filed your return, it is too late to change the information that you have entered. If you chose to have your refund mailed, it will be mailed. If you chose direct deposit, the refund will be deposited in whatever account you entered at the time of efiling.

I did enter the routing and account number given to me for my prepaid paypal mastercard debit card. According to my prepaid paypal account i can have my refund direct deposited onto my prepaid paypal mastercard. However i received an email from Turbo tax stating:

"Dear Shelbie,

We are writing to inform you that as of November 12, 2019, the recipient of a Person to Person transfer can no longer use PayPal to receive the funds that you have sent from your debit account.

In the meantime, there are other ways to send money!

  • Initiate a Person to Person transfer to another registered Green Dot accountholder

  • Use a MoneyPak to deposit money to a prepaid or bank debit card. Visit MoneyPak.com for terms, conditions and eligible cards. Must be 18 or older to use this product. Retail service fee and limits apply.

Thank you for being a valued Turbo Card customer.

Turbo Card Customer Care"

But my paypal prepaid Mastercard  says:

"Get your tax refund faster1 than a paper check!

Direct Deposit your refund to your PayPal Prepaid Mastercard® at no cost2. and you'll get your tax refund faster1 than a paper check. Just enter the Routing and Account Number when you file your taxes, or provide them to your file preparer." And then it gives me a routing number and an account number

Paypal is referring to direct deposit from your tax return to Paypal directly not from your Turbo Debit Card to Paypal.

It's best to follow the letter sent to you by Turbo Card Customer care because you are trying to initiate a transfer from your Turbo Debit Card.

Please follow the options offered in the letter. They are relisted below.

If you don't have a Turbo Tax card you will need to select a different method for your refund. There are several different methods for receiving your refund. Also refer to the link below for more assistance.

"Unfortunately, once your e-filed return has been accepted or you already mailed it, it's too late to change your refund."

My refund WAS accepted. So how do i change my method since you guys are telling me that my PREPAID PAYPAL MASTERCARD isn't allowed?? I put in the ACCOUNT NUMBER and ROUTING NUMBER that i was given for my paypal prepaid mastercard and my return was accepted. How am i supposed to get my refund now if you guys are denying me my direct deposit and refuse to let me change how i recieve it since apparently I'm not allowed to use my PREPAID DEBIT CARD SENT TO ME BY PAYPAL BECAUSE I HAVE A PREPAID CHECKING ACCOUNT WITH PAYPAL!!!

Also, why is paypal allowed to advertise that we can have our taxes direct deposited there if we can't. Why were my taxes accepted if my method of payment wasn't acceptable?

If the IRS can't deposit your refund to that account or number they will mail a check to the address on your return.

You can have the refund deposited to the PayPal account if it was coming directly from the IRS...however you must have asked for the TT fees to be withheld from the fed refund which means it must go thru the third party bank and they will no longer allow the transfer. Read the notice for other alternatives or they will mail a check to the address on the return.

But how do i fix it if the IRS has already accepted my tax return? I'm not being given another option.

There is no contact number on my notice. And it says since my tax returns had been accepted i cannot switch my payment method.

You are not changing anything on the return ... that ship has sailed.  What you have is a situation with either the third party refund processing bank which will withhold the TT fees from the refund  OR  the TT debit card.

I got the same message and I'm furious that this information was not explained while filing.

As far as I can tell, this is a brand new issue. I got my refund last year direct-deposited to my paypal account. I am pretty certain that when a deposit fails, a paper check is issued and then mailed. No one on TurboTax can help because the refund has already been issued (although, they should at least be able to answer the question).

I've called the IRS helpline, too, and have been through every single menu option to no avail. I'm on hold with a tax specialist, now. If I get any more reliable information, I'll come back here and comment, again. In the meantime, expect a paper check.

Thank you for this.

I've called both. SBTPG states that it has not received my refund and Turbo Card has no idea what is going on. Neither does PayPal or TurboTax. I'e tried contacting the IRS and haven't been able to find anything through them or their help centers. Any other ideas?

How did you end up finding out?

I found info regarding fudged account numbers and it said paper check so I am going based off of that assumption lol

Until the IRS releases the refund there will be no info at SPTBG or the Debit Card to be gotten ... Did the IRS release the refund yet ?

And as to why TT did not alert you to this situation .... TT had no idea the account you wanted the third party bank to send the money to was for PP ... all TT sees is a routing and account number for a bank account.  Not until the return is filed is the info sent to the processing bank and they check the account you indicated for the deposit ... at that point the fact it was for PP was first known.   So the third party bank is the one who sent the notice and will need alternative deposit info.

I'm a bit confused. Found this in a google search. I used TT (self-employed) and had my funds DD to my Paypal Cash card, which gives me a routing and account number. Paypal is also advertising having your Tax refund deposited to these types of accounts.

(I understand you can't send a refund directly to Paypal, their cash card allows DD if you have one though)

I can't remember If I did this last year or not. I have read on Igotmyrefund.com that some people have gotten their returns through Paypal and I don't expect an issue.

As far as the third party processor I cannot say but have heard that some refunds over 10K are being rejected on Paypal. Some others have said they received eMail for verification. I have not.

I am still waiting on a State deposit from the 26th *fingers crossed* it shows up tomorrow. (second of March)

Still it's disconcerting, some clarification would be appreciated. No emails received. I've called the FTB to confirm the deposit was sent (should be no third party for state). Called Paypal yesterday, they don't see it and won't look into it without a transaction ID... so If I don't see anything tomorrow I'll call and get that from them (the FTB, closed on weekends) Then I'll call Paypal back.

Customer service with Paypal is hit or miss, sometimes I can understand them and they are helpful, other times I can't and they don't seem to care at all.

Good luck to you all anxiously waiting! Rent is due for me today >.>
