I need to amend my return as my parents can claim me as a dependent and I did not enter this correctly.

How can I change can someone else claim me as a dependent?

I should have said I was a dependent but I claimed myself

Did you say you could not be claimed as someone else’s dependent, but it turns out your parent(s) can claim you?  Now your parents’ return is being rejected when they e-file, or it will be rejected.  That means your parents must print, sign, and mail their return.  They can still claim you as a dependent, but they cannot e-file now.

Your part in fixing this is to wait until your return has been fully processed and you have received you refund.  THEN you need to file an amended return, called a 1040X, to change the way you answered that question in Personal Info about whether you can be claimed as someone else’s dependent.  You will have to print and mail the 1040X—it cannot be e-filed. You might need to repay some of your refund.

The way to amend your tax return is to wait for it to be fully processed and you have received your refund.  Then you can use a form called the 1040X to prepare an amended tax return to add a W-2, your student loan interest, a 1099R, or whatever else you originally forgot to include.  (or to change a dependent’s status, etc.)

Select a tax year for specific amending instructions.

·         2017

·         2016

·         2015

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 2-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.

Wait about 3 weeks and you can check the status of your amended return:

I am having trouble finding where to put my parents CAN claim me as dependent. I accidentally claimed myself but since I was a student they can claim me also. After hitting amend return online where do I correct this? (Is it under person info or is it a specific form I have to change? I don't see the question about being dependent).

Are you using the Desktop program?  It is under My Info or Personal.

click EDIT by your name

Then scroll down to #3 Can someone else claim you?

Is that all that has to be done if I am amending because my parents CAN claim me? Just updated that #3 and send in?

Sadly yes ... in the explanation all you have to say is "amending to unclaim self" then sign & put it in the mail.

Is this process still accurate? I'm holding up my parents on filing their taxes because I made this same mistake. They need to claim me but I claimed myself. How do I fix this? I just E-filed yesterday.

Yes. Since your return is filed, you'll have wait until it is either accepted or rejected.

  • If your return is accepted you can amend your return.
  • If your return is rejected, you can make the necessary changes.

If you claimed yourself and your efile is Accepted then your parents will have to print and mail their return.  And you will have to mail in an Amended return to fix yours.

So wait and see if your efile gets Accepted or Rejected.

If they are entitled to claim you as a dependent, you must amend your return and say that you are being claimed. They can claim you, but they won't be able to e-file.
