I forgot to add my 1098 form but I already filed my taxes. Can I re open them and add this form?

Filed my taxes today. The 1098 form came in the mail later in the day... Is there a way for me to re open my taxes and add this?

No.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until late February.

If you have already filed your return, you'll need to wait for your tax return to either be rejected or accepted, if it is rejected you can add your Form 1098, correct any other errors on the return and resubmit it.

If it is accepted, you may need to amend your return to include the Form 1098.

You only need to amend if you are already using itemized deductions and the 1098 form will increase those deductions. If the interest reported on the 1098 form would not increase your deductions  because you are using the standard deduction, there is no need to amend as that form 1098 will not change anything.

Amending won't delay your original refund. However, if you are expecting a refund, we recommend that you wait to amend until after the IRS has processed your original return and you have received your refund, feel free to cash or spend it while your amendment gets processed

Please be aware that Form 1040X will not be available in TurboTax until February 23, 2023, but once it is available, you will be able to prepare and e-file your amended return.

Please see this TurboTax article for instructions on how to amend your tax return in TurboTax.
