I filed my taxes already from the 2023 year, I just received another w2 from the same job but it’s from 2024. What do I do?

You enter the 2024 W-2 on the 2024 tax return.  The 2024 tax returns are being filed now.

When did you file for 2023?  Online is only for 2024 now since November.

I’m saying I filed my taxes for the 2023 year just a few days ago. My job just sent me a separate w2 from 2024. Do I have to do an amends and fill out an 1080 form?

Yikes, you have a problem.  You entered the 2023 W2 into the 2024 program.   You now have to wait for the IRS to accept or reject your return.   Hopefully the will reject it.   But if they accept it you need to wait more for them to finish processing it and send you the refund.   THEN you need to Amend it to be for 2024.

Did you file a 2023 a year ago?  If not you still need to file 2023.

2023 is now a prior year.

Sorry it's too, late to start a 2023 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS.  And too late to efile 2023.

If you need to start 2023 or prior you can buy the Desktop download here,

TurboTax 2022 Prior Year Tax Prep - File Past Years' Taxes

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand.  Here are some basic forms.....

Here is the 2023 1040 return

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

a 2024 W-2 can only be entered on a 2024 tax return.  There is no reason to amend the 2023 tax return you filed.

They’ve already accepted my federal, but not there state. So basically, I have to for them to send the refund, then file for an amends?

Ok wait another minute.  Did you use the Online version to EFile the 2023 W2 or did you use the Desktop installed program and print & mail 2023?  If you used the Online version and efiled it was filed on the 2024 1040 and not the 2023 1040.

I mean I filed my taxes on the TurboTax app. I don’t know if that would count as online or what

Yes, if you used the TurboTax App, and you already got notification that the return was accepted, it means that your return was already electronically filed.

Since it sounds like you filed your 2024 return using a 2023 W2 form, you will need to wait until the return gets processed and then you will need to file an amended return.   Your 2024 return needs to report the amounts of your 2024 W2.  See the TurboTax article below for more information on amending a return.

Do I need to amend?
