I e-filed a tax return and claimed as an independent by accident and was told to wait for rejection or acceptance. It was just accepted, how do I amend the tax return?

How long does it take to amend a tax return? How will this affect my parents tax return?

The IRS will not be accepting returns until February 12. If your return is rejected, you will be able to make the changes in your return.

If your return is accepted, then you will have to amend your return.

Here are instructions on how to do that.

How to Amend a Tax Return

You will have to mail the 1040X, the amended tax return. It can take six to eight weeks or longer for the IRS to accept your return.

If your return is accepted with you claiming yourself, you parents will need to file a paper return and mail it in to the IRS. If they file electronically and claim you as a dependent, their return will be rejected since they are unable to claim you. The process will take six to eight weeks or longer.
