I discovered that the 2020 tax return I filed with Turbotax is different to the one my state received and I am being audited. Worse - I can't get speak to someone on TT.

I received a proposed audit of changes from my state. However, when I downloaded my state returns from Turbotax and spoke to someone at my state tax department, I discovered they were different resulting in a large bill. And it's an insidious loop, online or on the phone to speak to someone on TT. Never experienced anything like it.

@4calvino

You have to work with your State's revenue division to ensure that they are working with your own true and correct copy of your tax return. You may have to re-submit.

Turbotax can't do any of this.

That's the opposite of what they told me. We went over the few important line items to discover the discrepancy. What I know I entered in Turbotax - and what I entered correctly and is in the copy of my returns when I download it from Turbotax is different from what is in my returns that my state's tax department has that they are telling me was submitted by Turbotax. And they can not do anything about. They said I need to have a conversation with Turbotax to understand how they could make this mistake.

This number is not helpful. I tried it for a few hours today. It was, as I mentioned, an insidious loop. After finally getting a support ID number online and I would go back to the automated phone system only to be told I couldn't be helped and to try online. I need someone to call me.

I would really appreciate a response from a Turbotax employee explaining how I can speak to a person. It's very important. The link provided, as I said before, does not actually lead to a person. It's an automated response that takes me back to the site online.

I need a way to speak to a specialist at TT. This is a time sensitive matter, a result of a mistake TT is responsible for. The link, as I said, doesn't lead to a person, but an automated maze that ends in being referred back online!

In response to the state's proposed changes, you can dispute in writing the adjustments of the revenue division and then submit an amended tax return and if necessary supporting documents to correct the discrepancies.

In order to amend you need to know the error lines, which you say you already discovered.

TurboTax can't do any of this for you.

This doesn't address the fundamental issues. It's more complex. TT is liable. The state can't do anything - they have explained only TT can. Do I really have to keep going back and forth online, waiting for responses many hours later? It's impossible to speak to someone?

What exactly do you expect TurboTax to do?

A return can be e-Filed only one time.

What do I expect? I thought that was clear. I expect the courtesy of a conversation with a human being at TT. I expect an answer as to how this could have happened. And for TT to take responsibility. Otherwise, why in the world would I, or anyone, use TT if what happened can happen and there is no recourse. Let alone an explanation. I've tried to explain that I filled out my taxes correctly, that is, in this case I included an income stream (unemployment compensation) that is recorded in my filing with TT. However, somewhere in the digital process that income stream is left blank in the filing that my state received from TT. And now, nearly a year later I'm informed of this and that I owe back taxes. And you are telling me I am to expect nothing more than this back and forth?

Sorry, this is a user forum, where we exchange ideas and possible solutions to tax return problems.

If you want TurboTax you have to contact Customer Support and ask the rep to escalate your issue to a supervisor.

You can apply to collect any penalty and interest charged to you due to a TurboTax software error.

This is called their Accuracy Guarantee. The procedure is on their web site if you want to start that going right away.

I'm even more sorry, if you try to do that, you will probably not succeed but what do I know, I'm just a taxpayer.

If income was not reported on your tax return, doing an amendment to add it is not going to help you. You will just see the increase in tax that the state has already determined for you.
