The IRS is not accepting e-files until January 29.  You do not get the advance until after the IRS accepts your e-file.  For now, your return is in "pending."

MY RETURN IS IN PENDING—what does that mean?

Did you e-file?  Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”  If so, your return is now in “pending” on a server.  Do not try to change anything while your return is in pending.On January  29 the IRS will begin to accept/reject e-files.  The IRS accepts a FEW returns in test batches ahead of January 29—-but that is very random.   Watch your emails—including your spam folder—for the notice about whether your e-file has been accepted or rejected.  If your return is rejected you will be able to make corrections before re-filing.   If the return you e-filed is accepted you will have to wait until it has been fully processed and then amend it to fix any mistakes or omissions.  It has been taking the IRS four to six months—sometimes longer—to process amended returns.   If you e-filed your state return there will be another email later that tells you if the state was accepted or rejected.

WARNING:   Do not try to change anything on your return while it is pending.

If you get lucky and your e-file ends up in a test batch that is accepted earlier than January 29, you can get the advance upon IRS acceptance.  Most people will be waiting until after the 29th of January.

That's incorrect information.  I have 10 years of e filed returns to prove the irs accepts documents e filed outside of processing return dates. I wish people would stop saying that as true on here because I file early every single year and I have emails confirming acceptance by the irs much before they open to process returns so that's not the reason. I was told by turbo tax that they are holding the returns until the irs opens which seems more likely to me but normally I don't have an issue getting my refund advance.  This year I emailed the owner of the company this morning looking for answers and I got a call today, no answers yet but I will persist until I get answers for us all. I'm reliant on this advance to feed my children and seems by my past experience that when the irs gets my documents from turbo tax ( that always happened within 24 hours) it triggers that refund advance to be issued to me.

you are correct. the IRS does review some 1040s before official e-filing opens. so it's a question of whether your was selected early before e-filing technically opens on 1/27

No, reviewing has nothing to do with it. This e file is an automated system that doesn't shut off from accepting documents from anyone anytime or any day of the week so this system is only accepting the documents turbo tax has sent to them. It is not an acceptance to process the return. They sit there with the irs until they open for processing.  Technically it is called a receipt of acknowledgement that's why they say you'll get accepted or rejected within 24 - 48 hours because it's guaranteed b/c it's an automated system and I've found it to be this way for 20 years since I started filing taxes until this year.  I've got 200 documents in front of me I've analyzed from my past filing with turbo tax and h & r block and bank statements showing dates of refund advance deposits much before the irs opens to "process" any docum they already received.  Duh

There is a received date on our irs transcripts of when the irs gets sent our documents from turbo tax and in fact they do hold them every year and don't send them in on the day the irs opens. It's all documented in front of me. So the acceptance of our return email by the irs  if you look closely at the sender address comes from turbo tax so they claim the irs accepted our documents but my irs transcripts indicate later dates every time. Example I e filed with turbo 1/22/2023 at 8pm per my email & turbo tax app info. I received an email of the irs received by irs email 1/23/2023 at 1134am by turbo tax . The 3rd confirmation email on 1/23/2023 at 9:07pm from turbo tax says my e file was accepted and then only then do I receive my pre-approved refund advance from turbo tax minutes later every time. Like clock work. Yet the irs DID NOT receive my e file as per my transcripts until 2/3/2023 so explain to me how they could have confirmation receipt of my documents previously if they had not received them until 2/3/2023. Also in 2023 the irs opened to accept returns on january 23rd 2023 so turbotax is a fraud! Thank u very much! Goodnight

I called TurboTax & asked why it was still pending after 5 days they told me they placed a hold on my return & they haven’t sent it to the irs yet. So it’s not the irs ALL THE TIME TurboTax is holding our returns without telling us then blaming it on the irs

MY RETURN IS IN PENDING—what does that mean?

@xmasbaby0
that might be true for you but like I said I CALLED TURBOTAX AND THEY SAID THEY PUT A HOLD ON MY RETURN which is why it still shows pending.

@Diqqie Or.....it is also possible you reached a newly hired seasonal employee who did not do an effective job of explaining to you that most returns are being held on the server until the IRS begins to accept or reject returns on January 29.   Only a few e-files have been accepted so far---they have been in some small test batches which the IRS takes in before they officially open and start processing all the other e-files waiting on servers from millions of people.   Keep watching your emails.

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

@xmasbaby0

Nope. They clearly said they tried to charge an acct for my fees instead of taking it out of my refund & when the transaction failed they placed a 5 day hold on my return. Does that sound like something a new hire would just make up? & if so then they should RETRAIN THEM

@Diqqie Okay---then you have an unusual situation which is not common to other users.  Most users who post here who want to know why their returns are still pending are in pending for the reasons already give to you.    It sounds like there was some confusion over the method of payment you tried to use to pay your TurboTax fees.

@xmasbaby0

They could be in the same situation and not know it because turbotax doesn't reach out to them to let them know what's going on. Simple thing to do call turbotax & ask yourself don't listen to the copy & paste answers you're given.

My e-file turbo tax taxes were filed on the 12th and I was just notified at 6:05 pm tonight 1/21/25 that they were accepted by the IRS. I did apply and was pre approved for a refund advance loan. It is now 9:30PM and I still do not have it. Any idea if this is normal as they advertise it happens instantly after the IRS accepts your return?
