Ask your employer for another copy.

TurboTax does not have your W-2.

To import your W-2 directly from your employer into TurboTax, the following things are required:

  • Your payroll provider needs to be a TurboTax Import Partner.
  • Your W-2 must be available for import
  • We need the Box 1 amount from your W-2 or the year-to-date (YTD) gross income from your year-end pay stub.
  • In some cases, we may need the Box d Control Number from your W-2, but only if your payroll provider requires it.

If you can't get a copy of your w-2:

  1. Get your last pay stub and call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
  2. The IRS will ask you for some info before following up with your employer.
  3. After notifying the IRS, you can use the Form 4852 in the event that your employer doesn't provide you with the W-2 in time to file your tax return.

Here are the steps to take to get your W-2.

  1. Contact your employer  Contact your employer to see if the W-2 has ben sent, and request a duplicate.
  2. Contact the IRS:  If you could not get it from your employer you can contact the IRS.
    1. You can call toll-free at 1-800-829-1040 or contact a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office.
    2. You must provide your
      1. name,
      2. address, city and state (including zip code),
      3. Social Security Number,
      4. phone number,
      5. Employer’s name,
      6. address, city and state (including zip code), and
      7. employer's phone number
  3. You will also need
    1. Dates of employment
    2. From your final pay stub
    3. An estimate of the wages you earned, the
    4. federal income tax withheld, and
    5. when you worked for that employer during the tax year.
  4. The estimate should be based on year-to-date information from your final pay stub or leave-and-earnings statement, if possible.

If you have not received your Form W-2 by the due date and have completed steps 1 and 2,

  • you may use Form 4852 Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement
  • Attach Form 4852 to the return, estimating income and withholding taxes as accurately as possible.
  • There may be a delay in any refund due while the information is verified.
  1. File your return You still must file your tax return or request an extension.
  2. File a Form 1040-X If this happens to get the W-2 and it is different, you must amend your return by filing a Form 1040-X Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
