How do I e-file my 2021 amended return? CD version

I electronically filed my 2021 tax return in April of 2022 and it was accepted.  I have to amend the return for $6 of interest income that was left off that return.  There is no tax change.  I see that the 2021 amended return can be e-filed but the system will not give me access.  - How do I e-file.

If there is no change in the taxes you do not need to file an amended return.

This is to address excess IRA contribution interest that was not reported in 2021 but a 1099R has been sent to the IRS.  Turbo Tax and the IRS have both said I need to do an amended return

Ok...In that case it should be amended and filed with the IRS.

However, TurboTax will not e-file a 2021 amended tax return, it will have to be printed and mailed.  The 2021 amended return could only be e-filed using TurboTax on or before October 15, 2022.

I saw this in the support section today

Can I e-file my federal Form 1040-X amended return?

Your 2022, 2021, or 2020 federal Form 1040-X amended return may be eligible for electronic filing if the original return was successfully e-filed using TurboTax.

Turbo Tax is saying I can - What is the process?

Correct if the original tax return was e-filed.  But in reality I have seen most prior year amended returns having issues when the e-file selection is made in the File section of the program when amending.  Most of the prior year returns have to be printed and mailed.

However, yours may be one of the those that can be e-filed.  So in the File section use the e-file selection and follow the interview to complete the e-filing.

Thanks for the warning and the instructions  hmmm

So follow up question - I am concerned about being out of sync with the IRS getting a 2022 1099R for the 2021 excess contribution and not having amended the return.  What is your experience in this scenario.  Do I need to extend my 2022 return until they process the 2021 amended return assuming I mail it and it takes the estimated max time or up to October?

If I go to the File section on the return, it does not give me an option to e-file the amended return so I am sort of back to my original question - How do I e-file - can you check with a turbo tax support person to give me the steps?

Are using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions?  If so, all you need to do is click on File and then select E-file for the return.

your 2021 Form 1040-X has to be filed on paper by US Mail or FEDEX.
