I printed, but did not mail or e-file my 2022 return and discovered a significant income error. I want to revise my return. I found this instruction but it does not work. My UX comments embedded below.
To access your tax return after you've e-filed it or printed it as part of mailing your return to the IRS:
You'll now be in your return
You need to download the .tax2022 file from online. Then install the 2022 Desktop program on a full Windows or Mac computer to open it and continue. If you paid for the Online version you can call support and ask for the Desktop program.
How to finish a prior year online return
You will first need to download the tax data file from Online. It will end in .tax2022. You can download the tax file for free. Then you need to install the Desktop program.
After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).
i.e Those exact instructions work during the normal tax preparation season....
BUT...
Now that TTX has shut down the 2022 "Online" software to prepare for the startup of the 2023 software, you can now only make changes in your tax file using the Desktop software.
__________
TTX shuts down each tax season's "Online" software in mid-late October....every year. After that shutdown, you can only make changes, or amend, using the Desktop software on a full Windows or MAC computer.
_______
When you do get back into your file....do NOT hit the Amend button. Since you haven't sent it in yet, you are just changing/editing the data it contains and reprinting before mailing it in at the Post Office.
