How do I amend my tax return to show PENSIONS AND ANNUITIES instead of WAGES, TIPS...?

I put the amount in the incorrect box so instead of showing I had pension income as detailed on  Form 1099-R Iit shows I had wages.

Delete the W-2 you entered for pension income.

Enter w-2 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen.  Click on Jump to w-2

To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button

Or enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R

If your return was accepted by the IRS as filed, then you should amend it to make the correction.  As you follow the process for amending your return (instructions below), you will go back to the wages/W-2 section and delete the entry you made on your original return.  Then, go to the Form 1099-R section and enter the details from your Form 1099-R.  Don't forget that you may need to amend your state return too.

Use these steps to go to the Form 1099-R section:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link
