How do I amend a state tax return and edit the original refund amount?

I accidentally made a mistake on my state tax return by claiming a bigger refund than I should have and know I will need to amend the return if the error is not caught (let’s say I claimed $5000 but should only receive $1000). When I started the process to amend the return in Turbo Tax, the software assumes the original refund was processed/received and it shows the difference I have to pay back in red ($4000).  If I have to file the amended return before April 15 and my original refund isn’t processed, is there a way to change the number of the amount of my original refund from $5000 to $0 in the TurboTax software, so that I don’t have to pay $4000 out of pocket and potentially risk never seeing my $5000 again?

Wait to amend until the original return is completely processed.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
