If you have already e-filed your federal return, please take the steps below to e-file your state return.

  1. Sign into TurboTax Online.
  2. Go to Taxes Tax Timeline
  3. In the SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO section, click Add a state
  4. Click on the State Taxes tab.
  5. Click Continue to start or complete your state taxes.
  6. Click Done with States.
  7. Near the top-right of your screen, click the File tab.
  8. Keep going until you get to the screen We've determined the easiest way to file your taxes (you may need to click Prepare to Send to get there).
  • Click on Id like to change filing methods to switch from e-file to file by mail or visa versa.

Please note that you will not be able to e-file your state return if your federal return was mailed or has not been e-filed.

I paid to e-state and it was rejected; however, the federal was accepted.  How do i refile the state efile when the federal was accepted?

If you already filed your federal return with TurboTax, you can go back in and add a state return and e-file it if your federal has been accepted.

Please see the TurboTax FAQ below for instructions.

When you e-file you should get back 2 emails.  The first email only confirms the transmission.  The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your e-file. If you did not receive these emails, you can go to our e-file status lookup tool to get your current status for your federal return for confirmation.

Also. when you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc.

My federal was accepted buy I'm still unable to efile my state because the software kept on telling me to efile them together.

TurboTax is aware of and  investigating the issue with not being able to e-file the state after e-filing the federal.  Here is an updated article:

with turbotax sofware on my desktop. I am unable to e-file my state. I had already submitted the federal two days back.

Now it is not allowing me to do efile for state.

It is saying "to efile you must also select the federal return"

when this will resolved and how we get to know?

@msri You can Efile your State return separately after your Federal return has been accepted.

Click this link for more info on Filing Federal and State Returns Separately.

According to other users if you are using the Desktop program it got fixed today.  Try updating your program.  Go up to Online-Check for updates or quite Turbo Tax and relaunch it.  Or even reboot your computer.

How do I find my state taxes once I've file federal.  Turbo Tax is insisting I start a brand new file, but the state taxes are already done. Unfortunately, I didn't print them.  I do not want to e-file because it costs $25.  I simply want to print the completed state, but cannot find it.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. You should be able to see Your Tax Returns & documents
  3. Select show here.
  4. Select 2020
  5. Select Add a state

This will allow you to see your state return.  (You do not need to actually add a state, but this will allow you to access your existing state return.)

You will then be able to try to complete and electronically file or print your state return.

If you have no CA earned income to report on a CA return then even if you used a CA address you do not need to file a CA return.   If you filed a NM return then respond to the state of CA that you are active military and do not need to file a CA return and send a copy of the NM return showing you filed in that state ... a copy of your LES showing NM as your SLR would also be good.    You may get this fixed if you just call them using the number on the notice.

@Carlson  This thread is several years old and maybe out of date.  And many people have posted.  What is your question with details?
